The worm juice design needs rethinking. It shouldn’t just fall into a big square, no pour spout vessel. Add a spigot or make a better catching vessel. Also, co sided a black version of this. Green is 🤢

is there any plans for hungry bin ver.2?????????
@JoyJoyJoi7 ай бұрын
How potent is the worm tea that comes out of the bottom of the composter? How much water should I dilute it with before watering plants? Or do I need to dilute it at all?
@hungrybin15276 ай бұрын
The liquid that drains from a hungry bin contains concentrated nutrients, and is usually slightly alkaline. For this reason we don't recommend using it in your garden without dilution. If your hungry bin is operating normally, and the liquid is a light tea colour without any smell, it's good to use. We suggest diluting it 10:1 parts with water if you water on the soil, and 50:1 if you use it as a foliar spray. I generally water the soil around my plants, or around the drip line of trees. If you wish to add it to soil without dilution, you will need to test a small area first to ensure that your plants are not affected by the strength of the liquid. I sometimes add liquid directly to my garden if the soil is wet after rain, so I know it will be diluted. Like anything you can over-do application, particularly for plants in pots, or those that do not like the soil being too rich. We have some additional information on our website. I hope this helps, Ben.

Can you use dehydrated food scraps (like from a Lomi) along with fresh green scraps?
@benbell70398 ай бұрын
Absolutely, just be careful not to add too much at one time, dehydrated food can heat up and become acidic as it starts to rot. I suggest adding dehydrated food scraps along with dried leaves, shredded paper or cardboard to help provide more fibre and aeration.
@Mormor25 Жыл бұрын
Is there a way to contain the liquid (like a container that’s more closed with an opening at the top where the drip would go into). I ask as have toddlers and boys with ball sports so want to avoid that. 😊
@benbell70398 ай бұрын
We often have clients that put a small bucket or jug under the outlet to catch the liquid.

put some bokashi compost in whe i set mine up? Its well fermented
@benbell70398 ай бұрын
Bokashi is fine, but best to only introduce in small amounts, it's acidic and can cause issues if you add a whole lot all at once.
@altinsilsile36 Жыл бұрын
So you don't use food scraps like other vermicompost worm farms? You used compost soil for potting mix. What about manure. Those who breed worms feed them manure. I have chickens. Can chicken manure be used?
@benbell70398 ай бұрын
The bedding material is just used at the start when you first set the bin up, like priming a pump. The key is that if the bin is started with a full load of bedding, the larger surface area encourages the worms to breed faster as they are surface feeders. Once the system is running, you won't need to add any more bedding. Chicken manure is fine in a hungry bin, but start out with small amounts until you find the right balance, chicken manure can be very acidic, so you will also need to add some carbon rich material like shredded paper or cardboard, dried leaves, sawdust etc.
@doctordolamic9824 ай бұрын
The compost is their bedding and holds them intact, you add the food scraps on top and layer then on, collecting from the bottom, it will all shift downwards over time.

@LauraEllen999 Жыл бұрын
Can't wait to get one of these!!! But I just want to leave some feedback.... I could not understand the sentence that was being said at the 1:04 mark. It sounds like "the surface feed is not borrowers, like earthworms." I had to rewind it several times and finally had to look at the transcript, which says "they are surface feeders, not burrowers like earthworms." This makes sense, but that is not what it sounds like.... maybe because it's said in a New Zealand accent, or spoken quickly... I just wanted to let you know, if there is any way to patch in a voiceover that says "they are surface feeders" so it doesn't sound like "the surface feed"... that could help avoid a lot of confusion for some people. Just a thought. Looks like a great product and again, can't wait to try it, thanks for designing this. Looks like it works great and the worms will be super happy!

I bought a hungry bin and I do NOT collect a beautifully dry compost at the bottom. What comes out is super wet, full of worms and when I remove the bottom, a lot of the top portions falls down. I don’t know what Im doing wrong

What else do you use in your worm bin when you first set it up
@k.chriscaldwell4141 Жыл бұрын
I can make that for $30. Less than $20, if I try. For $10 more, I can put wheels on it. But I’m gonna trip mine out for $50 more. Chrome tape trim, glow-wire under the frame, a spoiler, and spinners on the rims. Gonna be sweet.

How small do pieces of wood need to be for worms to eat them?
@sydneygardener5402 жыл бұрын
I have had one of these bins for a few years and WOULD NEVER BUY A BRAND NEW ONE. The system clogs with moisture at the bottom, so you have to dig extra holes. It also compacts at the bottom so you need a stick or trowel to retrieve the compost. Get a second hand one, they are not worth their full price.

I may have overfed my farm and it's starting to smell a little. I don't think all that smell is due to the tiny amount of raw onion that I put in there since it was less than the amount I would put on a burger bun. Any recommendations? It's not so bad that I would start over at this point.
@carlporter2 жыл бұрын
Overfeeding means you have masses of rotting material in there and even that will calm down and the worms will eventually clean it up. We are greedy for compost with the minimal of effort. Starting over is probably not worth your effort unless all the worms have died too. I feed orange peels even though Ben says not to. The problem with them is that they take too long to get soft enough for the worms. They will mold before softening up. Although I used to give the worms "hot (spicy) food," I know now they cannot approach it until the hot has gone away. That acid will burn their skin. So if it tastes hot to you, don't feed it to them. These flavors are onions, garlic, and ginger. If these are cooked enough, then they are not hot. On the other extreme is alkaline (salt). This also burns skin--mine too! So don't throw salty potato chips in there or anything that tastes salty. Sweet, sour, and bitter are not problems. You should know the taste before feeding it to your worms.

no onions recommended if you read the food chart for them :)

Where does the "worm juice" drip from? Are there holes in the lower pan? Thanks.
@carlporter2 жыл бұрын
A removable interior cover with many holes. This drains it to a center hole. I catch under there with a measuring cup. Four years with six Hungry Bins: the drainage system has never clogged--absolutely genius.

Before you buy a Hungry Bin: I ordered one in August 2020 from greentools.ca to add to my first bin purchased in 2018. When the new one arrived, I immediately noticed the quality of manufacturing was inferior to 2018 bin. The green plastic was marked/scratched and streaked with noticeable discolourations, and it had a series of minor issues like stripped screws and black grease smeared all over the legs and wheels. I contacted the distributor to ask about the discolouration, the most noticeable issue compared to the bin I've been using since 2018 (excellent quality). The manufacturer responded it was normal, but Greentools eventually agreed to send a new bin. The replacement arrived with the same quality issues, plus an inward dent in the lid. I let the greentools owner in Canada know about the repeat colour issue, and he responded "...I cannot control what is in the boxes from NZ and we both need to move on." Bad customer service, slipping manufacturing quality, and a waste of time dealing with it. If you care about quality and good service when you buy a $400 plastic worm bin, look elsewhere.

First of all, you cannot compare the Hungry Bin to a city garbage can! Secondly, municipalities, typically subsidize the cost of trash cans and finally, apologies if you can't appreciate a quality, well thought out product. If you want to have a Wal-Mart product, then buy what they sell. My HB is working well and I may buy another!

Nice clean and professional looking system, however I do agree with the previous comments on the price....I assume that the molds for making the bin werte quite expensive due to the size of the bin. However, you may recover faster the investment, if you make the system more affordable. Also to have at least two size would be quite good.
