Excellent talk. It helps me with concept matching--which holds so much danger to actually NOT understand the nuance of Buddhism.

if only every other paragraph would be in English ...words are prayer, Dharma, So not asking for total translation ...but the middle way ...half and half...it could bring more followers... meeting half way ....

who is this minister ? no names showing and I really liked that he is reminding us of the Dharma < in English > I almost gave up following Jodo Shinshu as I am not Japanese and do not understand some services. Words are like a prayer ...I wish chantings were 50/50 English /japanese.

yes in Zen the sittings are long ..the chanting though is the Dharma ...in our languages, English , French , Spanish or other ...so the words become the guidelines, the reminders, the way...
@OrangeCountyBuddhistChurch5 ай бұрын
Agreed. We also have readings during Sunday services that we don't have during our sittings. Perhaps we should add those as well for balance, as you suggest. I appreciate the feedback. In gassho, Rev. Jon

yes , I was the one last wed . who posted in the chat < the regret not to know the meaning of words, of chant > You interpreted this as I wanted information ... being new, intellectual , etc ....Rev, ..you misread this feeling completely . When I say < Namo Amida Butsu > I know what it means ..so it enters so deeply in my heart ...The long chant in Japanese was composed by someone who felt the words ..To me a chant is like a prayer , vows , we repeat, imprint in our minds, awareness,....But I understand Pure Land services has this chants in Japanese. and so it is.. ....

Yes, you do bring up very good points. Thank you for that. As you suggest, we need both feeling and understanding. I just wanted to highlight the benefits of getting lost in a sound that touches one's heart. Thank you for the dialog. With bows, Rev Jon

"Aspiring to be kind is part of what it means to be Buddhist" - this really spoke to me. I try, but precisely because I always end up failing I rely on Amida Sama so that in my next life as a Buddha I can be kind to everyone. Namo Amida Butsu🙏

Excellent teaching. I am new to Buddhism, I have only been reading up on Buddhism for about a month or two. I am a GenX (just missed being a Millennial by 4 months 😅) and was raised Southern Baptist. I attended similar "Protestant" churches religiously for my whole life up until the last part of 2019. So, anyway. I very much appreciate how you clarified the terms so frequently used. That was a great help to me. For example, how "grace" in Buddhist context means something quite different than how it is used in Christianity. I agree, using a pipe organ is very triggering to someone like myself, and many others with a similar background. I am currently reading "American Sutra" by Duncan Ryuken Williams so I kind of understand why Japanese Buddhist "Churches" want this similar presentation, because of persecution experienced during WWII. 😞 However, to grow & resonate with a new generation of Americans an update in terminology, etc would be very helpful... This is a great start. 👏🏻 Thank you again ☺️

Thank you Rev. Turner for this important sermon. I noticed that there was no Buddhist resource on PFLAG's link for "faith based support", so I sent them the link to the BCA's pamphlet on "Same Gender Marriage" and asked them to include the link on their "faith based support" page. Happy Pride Month!

Thank you for your presentation Dr. Michael. I agree with you that alongside the dharma teachings, it’s the connection with people who embody gratitude that leaves me feeling energized instead of depleted. We are lucky to have found a Buddhist community that supports the mind, and the body. Namo Amida Butsu 🙏🏻
