Great review of the clearance expectations misunderstanding. would it be prudent it get it the habit of flying through SUDGE to avoid this in the future? or is that a waste of time and fuel?
@davidsine439019 сағат бұрын
When operating VFR, you must hear the words...You are cleared to enter the Cass B Airspace... This is completely different than the requirement to establish 2 two way communication in other types of airspace like class C and D. Since, in this case the controller did not say those words, I knew what the controller was going to say before he said it as to whether clearance to enter was issued. In this case I would have requested a clearance to enter the class.B airspace on your present heading when the controller issued the 7,500 VFR climb clearance. Reguardless, it was excellent that you asked for clarification before proceeding. Great job.
@DialAPilot12 сағат бұрын
Couldn’t agree with you more, David! Thanks for the insightful comment. Agree the right way to handle that would have been to request the clearance, instead of requesting to clarify that one was given when both of us knew that it had not been.

@@DialAPilot The only thing I was wondering, and too lazy to research, is what about when you are operating VFR into and out of the primary airport within Class B airspace. I know when departing VFR, in this case SFO, the local controller doesn't specifically say, "cleared to enter Class B Airspace" on takeoff, although technically you're already in Class B Airspace while taxiing, although you do have to have a class B clearance prior to departure of course. I could be wrong, but when landing at SFO VFR, I don't beleive the controllers specifically say, " Cleared to enter" either. 99.9% of the time I operated IFR into and out of SFO, so in that case I'm covered obviously. So the question of whether they say say cleared to enter, reguarding arrivals rarely came up so I don'tremember. Operating VFR in Class B Airspace is kind of a mix mash of regulations because you're operating VFR, but ATC treats you almost as if you're IFR as far as positive control. Normally mandatory heading and altitude assignments. They were even doing it to you somewhat operating VFR below Class B Airspace.

It's strange to have been given a clearance up to an altitude that would cause you to violate airspace you weren't cleared to enter (i.e., "at or below 3,000, at or below 4,000, etc.). Why not say "below 3,000" and "below 4,000" and perhaps include "remain clear of Bravo" for extra measure? Kudos for getting confirmation.

I always ask pilots a very simple question. I know you always try to reduce the risks. What happens if you are incapacitated on takeoff. What would happen if you were the only occupant? What would happen if you had three passengers on board and they did not know how to fly?

Curious - you turned "altitude mode" off on the autopilot while descending into KSQL. Why would you do this in comparison to dialing in an altitude and let the plane descend on auto pilot?
@DialAPilot6 ай бұрын
Great question, David. It’s an old autopilot with no “altitude preselect”. So it essentially has a pitch mode that it will follow- but it is very rudimentary in the vertical axis.

What you guys have I think is really unique and useful and entertaining. Stuff I'd like to see. Just random and variety is great. For those of us that don't fly often, and when we do it can feel like an alien activity, tips on how to prepare, carry or or check in, being efficient, things that help people feel more prepared, even making our way through airports - things that ultimately make flights more pleasant, and of course love the experiences of where you've been, recommendations!. Things that are topical in the news is great. And some sort of email blast in constant contact or something. I enjoy sometimes reading in -flight magazines, I was a journalism major and almost went to work for one. Now I'm a public infrastructure/land rights consultant, wife is a therapist, Even reading inspiration of self help related articles. At the core of it all, I think people love flying and going places and just the whole experience. Sorry for the long note!

I remember my first required solo took me from San Jose (Reed Hillview) north to Ukiah then to Auburn and back to San Jose. For me the most challenging parts were climbing out of Ukiah to get altitude to head east to Auburn. Then I had a little trouble actually spotting the Auburn airport (the location I flew to in 1979 seemed different) . I was chasing the runway downhill that day due to the prevailing winds. Other that than it was smooth 'sailing'.

so why do you taxi with your hands on nothing ?? ...not smart
@rnrnrkrk9946 ай бұрын
I've always wondered why communication from air traffic control has to be verbal? Is it simply because they want your eyes outward, like in cars? Depending on the radio quality, it's difficult to hear and I feel control tower has to be the bottleneck when there's a lot of traffic in the air..
@DialAPilot6 ай бұрын
Great question. Some air traffic control facilities do have the ability to communicate with aircraft via a system similar to text messaging- it’s called CPDLC (controller pilot data link connection). Both the aircraft and the facility have to be equipped for it. On the 777 we have it, but mostly use it during cruise, and then use voice procedures during taxi, takeoff, and landing.

I work right next to this airport, and you can see my building when you land. You mention it briefly but you are commuting to work at SFO for your commercial piloting job? Very nice commute. I've always wondered what it would be like to do the Truckee -> San Carlos commute for work.
@DialAPilot6 ай бұрын
That is correct! It’s a nice way to get down to SFO. If your building is right next to San Carlos Airport, the commute would be great for you. TRK is a great airport, especially with an airplane that has the equipment to reliably fly out of the airport during the heat of summer (turbo). I’d be happy to chat with you about it.
