If you don’t know MIRO then the cross with SLAMS is pretty hard, since SLAYS, SLAPS, and possibly a few other choices seem acceptable for “Lambastes”.

Instead of emphasizing TORNADO it would have been clever to have the cell exit aligned with WELCH since that was the poster (Raquel Welch) Andy used to cover his tunnel entrance. It's pretty iconic for the story too -- the full title of the Stephen King story was "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption", the Hayworth poster was the original cover for the secret escape.

Pair, Plumb, Current, Lyme would be a good set of connections with Pair, though I reckon it would be purple, so the sitcoms go blue, etc.

When you saw the 5-Down clue, how do you quickly know (or correctly guess) that it's TSAR and not CZAR. I suppose that the S is more easily crossed than the Z, but I think I've definitely seen it go both ways

95% of the time it's TSAR

It’s funny I figured out the theme much earlier than you (a rarity) but I had a lot of mistakes in the lower middle. SEMIS for HEMIS, never heard of the latter, also PRIME for PRIMO like you. Sometimes I think we’re too critical of what are generally wonderful puzzles, but this seemed like a perfect opportunity to have a grid with rotational symmetry, and place the circles in their proper compass positions.
@nathanielwoodthorpe8334Ай бұрын
Hey Robert! This Strands stumped me too. One small tip for the end (21:00) , on the left it says "5 of 7 theme words found". That's including the spangram, so you know the spangram will hug the left or right side and won't split down the middle.

I'm probably seeing an unintended pattern (given that crosswords often lead rise to rotationally symmetric structures), but I can't be the only one who thinks the mini looks like a swastika, right? They even got the orientation the "correct" way. Short of blacking out the A and P in WARP and the M and L in MOLD, I don't think they could've made a grid resemble such a symbol more closely Edit: I guess I'm talking about the 1st NYTXW Mini, not today's
@CrosswordRobertАй бұрын
I didn't notice as I was solving, but now that you've said it, it's hard to unsee. It is true that 90/180 degree rotational symmetry can often inadvertently lead to some suggestion of such... but I do think they could have been a bit more sensitive. It even has the unchecked squares, which I found odd...

Yeah I am sort of expecting that...... I'm not sure any set of rules would have prevented cheating, but there doesn't seem to be any sort of check on cheating, as far as I can tell. Maybe should have made it fastest average time over a year-long period or something.
