Conceptually it is like an HDD, except we have chips instead of disks, so no mechanical components. Similar failures. Much more complex to recover, especially when it is a firmware failure & increasingly so with newer SSD models. Reading from bigger data recovery forums is a good start.

Not all WD My Book Duo are the same. Some support encryption, which is tied in with certain software component on the enclosure's backplane and each drive's internal firmware. So, swapping out enclosures may not do the trick. I am suspecting that you may have a slightly different model My. Book Duo and it does not work due to encryption.

0MB indicates the drive’s controller cannot establish communication with the NAND Flash chips due to degradation, which in turn triggered a firmware problem. Like we said in the video "It is NOT dead". Warhc the video again. Recovery may still be possible by a specialist if the chipset has support for a firmware solution.

@@Davesrecordtree 1) You should not take this to a PC shop, as they are not knowledgeable about hard drive failure and recovery from RAID arrays. You need to go to a Data Recovery Specialist, like 300 Dollar Data Recovery in Los Angeles. 2) The data from all the drives need to be cloned to other healthy drives, then assemble the RAID array virtually in software, then finally extract the files to a new storage. No,.nobody competent would have time nor the desire to do this over the phone or internet. The results would not be good anyway, as you do not the proper equipment to maximize chances of success.

The question is, what if the original factory BIOS chip is fried? Is there any way way to program the new BIOS chip without having one to copy? IE does Seagate, and other other drive makers, make the original code available in any way? Or do they have encryption keys involved? ETC.
@Datarecoveryguru1
@Datarecoveryguru1 2 ай бұрын
@@TheProjectHelpDesk This has nothing to do with encryption keys. That's a different topic and it doesn't apply to the context in the video. Without a copy of the BIOS available, it is not possible to get a copy. Seagate claims to not have copies of specific drive firmware. Don't see the point in them keeping one. If you need to recover the data, depending on the exact model Seagate drive, then a really good data recovery specialist may be able to work around the BIOS missing issue and recover the files. Obviously it will be very expensive as it requires highest level of data recovery tech skills.

@@tomanderson8251Yes, of course, but No. Everybody making such comments are selfish wanting to watch something that is ideal for them. Think when anything that is giving to you for free (e.g. a sample food at the mall with a toothpick, a piece of paper with a promotion instead of an email or text message, a discount only if you go to purchase inside the store vs online order, being able to discard of large garbage but only at the recycling center not on with your weekly trash bins, etc), while it is cool to get, it is not ideal for how the person wants to use them, because you may have an issue with hygiene, having to drive somewhere rather than order online, etc. While it is ok for the person to judge the free content because it is not ideal to them, it is not ok to cast the judgment. Trust me: nobody cares so much to give feedback by going in the comments section to type a sentence. In their heart, they are just inconvenience that they are not getting whatever in the ideal way they are expecting it. It is the same with people leaving good reviews for businesses. Only a small percentage of people organically leave a good review. Most times they do so if they were incentivized by something. But let it be a bad or inconvenient experience with a business, the judgement and hate level to leave a bad review and complain is through the roof.

Is this failed ssd caused by power surge or short circuit? If so, can data be saved restored from this type of causes? My ssd just died and overheat because of power surge and short circuit btw
@Datarecoveryguru1
@Datarecoveryguru1 3 ай бұрын
The SSD in the video does NOT have an electronics failure. That's the purpose of the freeze test, more specifically to see of any one component is getting hot in the circuit, presumably showing an electronics failure. But it is not electronics failure on this case in the video. The idea with the video is to show the technique to rule out problems. As far as your SSD goes, yes, many times SSDs with damaged electronics component from power surges or whatever are recoverable. Sometimes not. It depends on the extent of damage, which components specifically are damaged, does the SSD employ hardware encryption preventing working directly with the NAND chips hosting the files, and so on... many unknowns... until we see model, chipset, tests like these, along with tests with advanced equipment to see how the drive behaves when sending factory commands.

I was wondering whether to buy one of these, and this risk of data being unreadable, is news to me. Question - is this because the user turned on encryption (i.e. we have an option), or does the drive automatically encrypt? Because, if they encrypt without us having a say, that to me sounds like an added problem. While RAID1 protects from HDD failure of 1 disk, that assumes the electronics are working. But if the controller or any other part of the enclosure fails, and the data cannot be retrieved, then that is like losing both disks. Might as well use 2 separate but unencrypted disks.
@Datarecoveryguru1
@Datarecoveryguru1 5 ай бұрын
It is an added problem, because of how the encryption technology works. Users expect high speed, therefore just about all encryption designs pre-prepare the storage for encryption. The user just has to activate it in software. Can you image if the encryption engine would encrypt live as the files get sorted in real time. It would be slow as heck. The problem arises when the device fails, hence needing help from a specialist, because the average user won't understand and know how to deal with the pre-encryption design.
