Here's the original Isley Brother's version without Jimi. It's crowded, over-sung and no where near as cool as the Hendrix touch that shaped the Isley sound. kzbin.info/www/bejne/anKWhoGflqyigbM

I wish he had been able to hold onto that voice a little longer. Once he lost his hair there was a noticeable change.

I wrote “R.E. M.” on all of my book-covers in high school in the mid/early eighties. I developed the greatest group of friends by doing that. Saw the Reckoning, Life’ Pageant, Fables, etc tours with those same great friends. We formed a great band in high school and used to play covers of everything REM. Life was great.

I never knew anything about Scott until the time came to work and jam with him in the late 80s and early '90s. So that's how I miss him: in those contexts. He was a cool guy at work and playing, and still missed.

The Isleys had to know what a gem they had when Jimi was their guitarist... or do we just have the benefit of hindsight?

Delicate, melancholy, poignant. Apparently it was inspired by a moment when they were touring back in the Chronic Town period and Peter and Michael were on a pier overlooking a beach and Peter just started crying, and couldn't say why. That's the vibe of this song: beautiful sadness
