Ouch pouches and boo-boo kits are amazing. Many a day has gone from "this is really bad" to "this is a minor inconvenience" because of just a little prep.

I went to an elementary school in rural western North Carolina as a child. This was in the very early 80’s. Our school was granted a TRS-80, and our “GT” class was given instruction on some basic programming. That was my first experience with a micro-computer. My parents soon after purchased a C64 with the tape deck/data and then an Apple IIe dual floppy.

I have two different styles of first aid kit. The type I'm trained to use on other people, containing all the proper dressings, antiseptics, sutures, tourniquets and all that stuff. Then there's my "personal first aid" which consists of cyanoacrylate glue, calcium chloride, duct tape and a staple gun.

I’m a systems engineer and even though I only work away from my desk in a server room, I cut myself al the time on cut off zip ties. I bought a med kit for my desk for $30 and I and a number of my other coworkers use it. Between that and my near-pharmacy level of non-prescription meds and everyone knows who to go to. No reason not to when I have an assigned desk.

Because they only hold classes for CPR during the day, while I'm driving School Bus. As good as I am, I haven't (yet) figured out how to be in 2 places at the same time. I do, however, have a body bag or two.

Because I done first aid in the army every civilian job since they send me off on first aid courses', there's a BIG difference between field first aid and what St. John's teach you, but the basic ideas are the same, breathing, bleeding, burns then breaks. Some things are slightly different like if you come across a femoral bleed the military say ' apply pressure above bleed with your size ten boot to the groin then tourniquet then dressings. if you did that in a civilian situation you would probably get sued.

I carry epinephrine and some other meds everywhere, and I was astounded just how useful a few bandaids and alcohol swabs were. Yeah, genuine trauma treatment is pretty cool, but dude, so is being able to tape up an annoying papercut when you are working.

Just like every body bag/murse/go bag should have a couple common tools in it (at least a knife and a decent set of locking pliers) I think every tool box should at least have a small IFAK. Doesn't cost a lot and can really save your ass, or at least a finger. Speaking of, a couple empty Ziploc bags and an instant cold pack can make the difference between getting your digit sewn back on and changing your nickname to Stumpy. Plus the ammonium nitrate in there can be repurposed in ways that get videos demonetized when combined with diesel or aluminum powder.

I always have band-aid (in 5” strips) and paracetamol with me. Once I forgot my leatherman and nobody else had scissors, so I tried and managed to rip a usable band-aid by hand. For more problematic stuff I have tissues to stuff the wound and a phone to call in professionals. As far as CPR goes, my ethics is that this world is crowded, and we let people live for way too long. So if someone would die, I am very sorry and I feel your friends and families pain (I might feel that pain), that’s just how life goes.

I'd recommend a stop the bleed course as well. It's a great basic course on identifying life-threatening hemorrhage and how to stop different types of bleeding wounds.

Couldn't agree more people always think cpr course but statistically speaking bleeding in more common than cardiac arrest

I used to date an EMT-B (she became a pharmacy tech instead of going Paramedic), she had a cotton bedsheet cut into 3"-wide strips, carried one strip rolled up in her purse, the rest in her medic bag, and so do I. It kinda does for all the wound dressing a Band-Aid or maxipad won't heal. Packing a GSW, tourniquet, wad it up for compression bandage ... one of those strips of bedsheet, an assortment of Band-Aids, a couple of Kotex, and a bit of duct tape are in my camera bag. Edit: I always have a decent knife in my pocket (currently Benchmade Osborne), OFC. and a Victorinox Recruit (two blades, two screwdriver/opener Swiss Army Knife) in the bag.

The way you understand electricity is almost as incorrect as how he understood it. The current doctrine on how electricity works is functional for us, but bleeding edge physics research thinks it is entirely incorrect. Future humans will think your mastery is just as rudimentary as you see his.

Gone from being a welder to an actual aerospace engineer and had apprentices at every stage along the way. Always fun to teach a total noob, first task is always having them make a list of things they want to learn and something they want to make, then you anchor the other skills taught around their interests and project they’re interested in. People need to take apprentices and interns more seriously, they want to learn, and if you teach them right you can custom tune them to be an agreeable co worker for later.

I say this as a millwright: if you're the smartest person in the room, you're NOT in the wrong room. You have an opportunity to try to elevate the other people there if they're receptive to it, and THAT'S pretty cool.
