The way I read the lyrics, it's about an irish person that having fought for their land (verse 2) and killed several people along the way is now lamenting that they have "fallen from grace with god". The toughest line for me is when they ask to be buried at sea instead of land, where all the fighting goes, so that they can be spared having some fellow fighter's corpse fall on top of theirs. It's heartbreaking, really!

I discovered Sean McGowan when I lived in California in 1985. My three-year-old daughter and I would do an Irish jig in our living room. Later, she would say, I want to hear that Jiggery music. my son loved him too. We all cried when we learned he died last year and Sinead O’Connor. I discovered her when I was driving one day and heard the song put your hands on me. I actually had to pull over so I could hear better. I recognized her genius and originality.
