The interview mentions that in spite of YB being a charlatan, that students of his continued to experience benefits from the yoga. While this is/was true for many, there are/were also members of the cult who didn't have much of a yoga practice. The group was supposed to do 2 and 1/2 hours of yoga and meditation each morning, but there were plenty of people who struggled with that regime and slept through the whole group sadhana or did not show up at all. Most 3HO people could not perform the more strenuous Hatha Yoga practices and did not look like radiant examples of superior health. I encountered one person who referred to them as "the chubby people in white."

I have nothing but respect for Daniella's work, because as a white lady and some knowledge of Hindi, she was bold enough to enter the world of sadhu's, many of whom can be cranky and disrespectful. Wonderful work Daniella!

Title is very confusing or was it meant to use that way. Indian mystics, philosophers, scriptures all have impacted sufisim and some may have met yoga gurus or seekers from Nath lineage as Sufis were interested in all Siddhis but Sufis didn’t contributed to yoga. Your title should be ancient India’s or yoga’s influence on Sufism

Brahmins were the priests who were marked for transmitting the Vedas to next generations. They lived very austere lives so that the purity of purpose is maintained. Symbolically they used to wear a sacred thread ( to continue the unbroken thread of knowledge ) . But now brahmin is a bad word in India and their sacred thread is cut and mocked by other Hindus violently, as the latter are influenced by western thought which labels brahmin as ' opressor '
@mahalakshmir24043 ай бұрын
Westerners should not interpret varna system. They are destroying the carriers of unbroken knowledge.

I think people should stop hijacking Sanskrit as European language. If it was so precious to you , then why did you demonise it before? It is the Indians who have protected and safe guarded it over millenia, isnt it ? Give them the credit

Varna system is actually not central to Hinduism but to all world pre religions ( check our medieval Europe, China, Korea, Japan etc ) . It's not something ' Evil ' as projected by media and ' scholars '. It just gives us an idea about the capacities in which one can excel with least resistance from tge universe. If a person tries to understand the system through this lens, they would appreciate the sheer genius of text unsurpassed anywhere

Varna system results in each person reducing their CARBON FOOTPRINT because they would pursue what comes naturally to them, and not waste time

Unfortunately you like tibetan buddhism but dislike Tibetans customs and call "uneducated monk" was not very intelligent.rather arrogant. The first ever westerner with geshema had completly different experience. Too bad. Too bad for your experience by the way I'm not a male but a self-confident and emancipated Tibetan woman from Europe. Good day.

47:00 Kunsang - thank you so much for your honesty!! such a gift. Deep gratitude for sharing your story, eye-opening. Wish every person who hosts "tantric" retreats in the west would hear what you said, and every person who thinks about joining there would understand how deep this practice is, and how much everyone need to learn and study before diving into the Tantric Practice. Also, I have a feeling a lot of people might be glorifying Tibetan practices, which often are outdated and misogynistic. Everything changes when you are a woman, and as you say: a western as well. Sending my love and admiration. What a journey! Looking forward to meet you one day. All the best! #PalianSHOW

We had no spiritual or yogic background but after the first psy experience, we really dived into it learning from Upanishads , especially non duality texts and philosophies. One of us live in Oregon and I see you are in Oregon as well. Can we meet up and explore and exchange our findings ? Hope to hear from you.

That’s my Islamic studies professor as a teen. Amazingly brilliant w & yet so open minded-he was not a “dominating persona” as a professor . I remember he just quietly observed while we came to our own conclusions in our “open circle freshman seminar” That’s why I have such fond memories of his class -I learned so much & grew astronomically intellectually & it’s only because of his making sure his “Islamic curriculum “ had a wide variety of progressive Muslim thinkers . Thankful for Dr. Ernst coming into my life.

why, when there is a program that romanizes devanagari instantly, why oh why do we westerners need to learn to read devanagari? Learning Sanscrit is hard enough without building gratuitous difficulties into the project. Romanize the texts. Do it! Kuru!
@yogicstudies5 ай бұрын
It's true that it is easier to begin learning Sanskrit in a more familiar roman script, and indeed one may even come to prefer reading Sanskrit in this way. But most students find it rewarding to also learn Devenāgarī, a script that was created specifically for the language. And we would contend that it is extremely valuable to gain fluency in this script to open access to a vast archive of texts only available in this script. However, it is indeed by no means the only script Sanskrit was written. And because it is true that it was typically written in the local/regional script, one can make a strong argument for westerners engaging Sanskrit in their own local/regional script (i.e. roman). So, one doesn't NEED to learn Devanāgarī, but it is strongly recommended.

@@yogicstudies Thanks for reply. Well, I've come to the point of accepting that there is nothing for it but to put up with learning this PIA script system. I will give it a shot. If I make any headway I will see if I can enroll in one of Dr Ruppel's courses. I've learned from various mutually non-affiliated sources that she is both a good Sanskritist and a good teacher ( a not-to-be-taken-for-granted combination).Thanks

This is such a great conversation. Highly recommended! So, at one point Dr. Wildcroft mentions that a swami said that all of this formality in yoga was just an excuse for people who love the practice and philosophy to come just be together with each, but she couldn't remember the reference. I know of a particular reference like that, and I love it. It's from the book "The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Commentary on the Raja Yoga Sutras" by Sri Swami Satchidananda in his commentary on Yoga Sutra 1.15. It's a long comment, but here is part of the relevant section: "I feel happy and they all feel happy being there, so they make me happy and I make them happy. We just spend a little happy time together, that’s all. We just talk about something or do something in the name of Yoga. Yes, that is the secret. There is a joy in being together, that’s all. [ . . . . ] What else do we want in this life? And that is Yoga." Satchidananda, Swami. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Commentary on the Raja Yoga Sutras by Sri Swami Satchidananda (p. 50). Integral Yoga Publications. Kindle Edition.

sh - kh transformation is extremely common in Indo-Iranian languages. Don't know what Mr.Smith was talking about. Even within the dialects of Odia, we have dishuchi and dekhuchi to mean see. In Pashto some dialects spell words with sh, others say with kh.
