Heya guys, great discussion here! Butte, not Billings, is the place to go, u can request pdf's of some, not all, of the old reports in pdf format direct from Butte via email, sometimes a fee is rqrd, some old records are on microfiche too... When I was prospecting a few years ago just northwest of your area in the Ogden Mountain area the PHD dissertation a Butte geologist did back way back in the day on Ogden mountain to get his doctorate provided good insight to go along with all the usual mine reports (or lack thereof), and it came from Butte of couse, where he got his degree, but many areas around there don't have that granularity that I could find. All my research into that whole area around Helena, which is SUPER JUICY due to all the hundreds of mines and placers resulting from past tectonic forces and the ongoing volcanic activity relatively close to surface from Lincoln to south of Butte and all the way east to Yellowstone, indicates everything has been checked out thoroughly in the past by the sheer volume of prospecting and mining people that whole area received up until 50 years ago. As u guys know, its a prospecters dream but the lack of good information, or accessible info, is also a huge problem for sure besides the sheer volume of prior work done in the area. I think Mr. McCullogh would confirm that...yes he is the go-to guy for that area.... At about 55 min in there is discussion about "where is the vein to find above all the patented placers below" I was reminded of one area east of u not far away that was very very rich for placer but yet no vein was ever found that could be directly tied to it, because they determined later the whole vein was weathered away over a million of years or more, a key thing to remember for all of us. That area is confederate gulch, is well documented because of all the tens of thousands of miners there and the original hoard of placer gold, and a shit-ton of miners looked for that vein but it was gone.... As u guys have seen, all that research digging up also takes much time which removes u from being out in the field in an area with a short season!!

I've been getting headaches and allergies from it. It's supposed to be better this week, but unfortunately, it looks to be blowing your way. 😬 Thanks Keith Peace Prospector Tripp

It smells a bit different than plain sulfur. Perhaps a sulfide residue though. Smoke bad here. Visibility about 3 miles. :luckily Eva and I are not too sensitive.

@GrooberNedJardine10 күн бұрын
Being a regenerated Pine forest there has probably been a lot of excavation work over time , maybe adding to the confusion you are seeing Keith . In an area not too far from where i prospect around , was a lot of mine shafts and they have posted warning signs in the area of many shafts that are not to deep , but they consisted of verticle Quartz plugs that came straight upright , and when the tops through erosion appeared the old timers dug them straight down to about 30 feet and if they found nothing in the quartz they would abandon them . Some became profitable . I came upon several of the shafts myself , but one i came upon once had been dug around in a concave hole only about 2 foot deep exposing the Quartz plug .It was as neat around as a drum and about 18 inches , maybe 2 feet round , it was a recent appearance and lots of people had a tinker around . I too went over it with a metal detector with no response , hence i walked away from it like everybody else . I suppose there are multiple scenarios and anomalies YOU , might be dealing with . Sorry for rambling on , lol and sorry i have no idea what you're up against , best of luck 👍👍 Other than to gather up what samples you have and get the gold out of em , and continue the search . Cheers Ned . ✌

@mrvirtue218110 күн бұрын
My observation is tree's look the same, meaning they were planted around the same time & here get soil disruption. Find old tree's and dig around the base. Tree roots of old tree's i would focus on, and not disturbed out of whim fractional quartz. Make it simple. That Mtn has been tampered with & you are digging up second-hand rocks.

Would be nice if you had a geological map of the area that would show know viens and faults. Then you could get a general idea of the strike direction and dip on them. This would help solve the old timer ditch mystery of if they were following somthing or trying intersect a vien to locate it.

There is a major fault close by that is near vertical, The bedding is supposed to be dipping at about 20 degrees.

Keep pulling up on that lead there. You never know what will come up. A little story about a mine in the desert that a friend had for 10 years. He was always following the quartz and residual lean placer which lead him to large masses of fractured magnesite ( yes- magnesite) overlain by green andesite and basalt lateral and below the quartz. The fracturing was extensive and intense and in the fracture voids was a light weight dark brown powder with very little iron that panned consistently, and fire assayed at 1/10 to 1/14th opt. he was living right on top of it. The grades were lower than what he wanted, but the tonnage was big. He passed on without mining it. He loved the hunt too much to stop hunting for the big one. The magnesite was a metamorphosed magnesium rich tuff with zero quartz also associated with a dry river channel nearby. You can probably imagine all speculating we did over BBQ and beers out there.

Then why do no trenches (there are many others) never open up side ways or deeper/ Good thought, weird evidence on the ground.
@shanefrericks592910 күн бұрын
I think it runs vertical instead of horizontal across that mountain. It is a mesmo thermal vein you are looking for Keith that's why those guys didn't find it going straight up the mountain they were hoping to hit it running vertically but it comes straight up out of the Mountain. They picked up that float and threw it in the trench they were going to sample at or take it with them and it never happened. I have found a vein like that structure in Arizona before
