Barnsley has never been really any more dangerous than anywhere else. The town, like many in the Midlands and North, suffered a lot during the Thatcher government era and by the 90s was looking very run down and unpleasant. However since then, and more so in the last 10/15 years a lot of investment has gone into the town centre and has slowly began to filter out to the surround areas. The town has reinvented itself as many of the big high street chains closed down, the council has done a pretty good job of attracting and encouraging smaller traders to open whereas other towns haven't managed to do that. One of the good things the council did when they planned the rebuilding of the town centre was to try and keep the market as one of the focal points, something nearby Wakefield didn't do and as a result Wakefield hasn't got a good market hall as the new one they built was soulless and empty (It has now closed). Other towns and cities could learn alot from Barnsley to be honest.

I would also add that of course Barnsley has it's rougher areas, and these can have issues with anti social behaviour and often feral gangs of kids, but travelling around the country (and other countries) that isn't unique to Barnsley, it's a problem pretty much everywhere.

Having lived in Barnsley borough all my life. I can say without doubt most people are what makes our country great. Nowhere is perfect but Barnsley is as good as it gets. Anyone who thinks otherwise has never travelled.

I'm American but my mother's dad grew up in the area and after I've watched a few Yorkshire walking videos in major towns and cities.... this one is the least bleak. Barnsley looks cute! Not horrified by this one! There are a few where I'm actually horrified...

Hello Hazel, thanks for your comment it’s good to see that someone from another country can say something good about our Town.Myself in 1994 4 friends and myself had a road trip from Phoenix in Arizona in a 1970 Ford Galaxy 500 (later owned by Robbie Coltrane) to Baltimore and Like everywhere else there were good and bad places but I have to say after all the places we visited over a month it was so good to get home to Barnsley
Barnsley looks unrecognisable to me now, 9 years since I was last there, it looks horrible compared to what it used to look like. The only building I can recognize from being a kid is Boots, that looks just the same.

Wonderful to watch, brought back so many memories of the area where my Father opened up the Farming community after serving time in the 2nd World War 1946/1970. Jongwe mountain could be seen from the farm homestead.

I lived in Barnsley for about eight years. My Yorkshire wife says that I am a southern Jessie, but I have to say...having lived all over the UK and across Europe, I think Barnsley can be mighty proud of itself. It's a great little town.

I don’t know why your title says dangerous because it just isn’t. Barnsley people are friendly are helpful on the whole. This town survived a major industrial shutdown and came out the other side. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and has a lot of history. If you want a dangerous town try going anywhere else.
