Just got back from Japan and we used the digital Suica and Pasmo apps (set up before we left home) and they worked great! Got a Ninji wifi hotspot and a battery pack just in case - never ran out of power. Easy to keep adding money as needed. Got down to 0 Yen planning the last train to the airport. Great video for first timers!

Thank you for the information. I will travel to Japan next year for the first time. I arrive at Haneda airport at 5 am and want to go straight to Kyoto. What time do you recommend I reserve for Shinkansen to Kyoto because I bring oversized luggage? Thank you
@MMTravelJournal
@MMTravelJournal Ай бұрын
I am not able to answer part of your question because I have no experience with oversized luggage. It's been nearly 10 years since I've travelled with more than a carry-on. I simply do not know if the Shinkansen requires something additional for accommodating oversized luggage. Regarding the time for the Shinkansen, I have a few thoughts. If it were me, I would NOT buy the Shinkansen tickets in advance unless you can get a refundable ticket. The reason is, many things can happen from now until your ride on the Shinkansen. There's always a possibility of your flight being cancelled, and a bigger possibility of your flight being delayed. Plus, there could be variability in processing times in customs and immigration. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

This was a VERY useful post. I've been researching this topic for 4 years & this is the clearist explanation I've found. Thanks so much. One question: when discussing the Boarding Position for Fastest Transfer - the 1st example at 30:19 you indicate that it's the 6th car (not highlighted). But the 2nd example at 31:26 you say it's the 1st car which IS highlighted in blue. Which is correct? The highlighted in color or the small white one? Please clarify.
@MMTravelJournal

@evedeinlein Oh crap. I watched this video multiple times looking for mistakes before uploading 🙄. Sometimes I glaze over after staring at the screen for hours. It’s definitely the cars highlighted in blue. Thanks for notifying me of the mistake. I don’t think I’m going to delete the whole video for that, but will definitely post a correction in the comments. Also, it makes me happy you found some useful info in this video. Thank you for your kind words. -Matt

@akiminato8445 Yes! Your ICOCA card will work almost everywhere in Japan except for the most rural areas. And yes it will certainly work in Tokyo. The only concern is you cannot refund the deposit and the balance of your ICOCA card in Tokyo.

I'm visiting Japan right now for the first time. I stayed in Roppongi, Tokyo, for a few days, then Kyoto for a couple more. I'm currently in Osaka, and I'll spend a few more days in Shinjuku, Tokyo, before returning home to the States. I've been mainly using Google Maps to get around, and I have pocket Wi-Fi since free Wi-Fi isn't as dependable, but I've still gotten lost a few times. I only had an issue in Osaka after I arrived from riding the Shinkansen (bullet train). After I transferred to a public train the station attendant had to let me through cuz the Shinkansen QR code didn't work.
@MMTravelJournal
@MMTravelJournal Ай бұрын
@J2-Production Not bad. Once I had to come back out of a subway gate that I accidentally entered and it wouldn't let me. I had to talk with somebody using an adjustment machine next to the gate. That was a little stressful because I couldn't understand the guy talking to me through the machine.

Hi there! 39 and 42 year olds here! Last year my husband and I had gone to Japan for two weeks and one of our first stops after Fukuoka was a super remote and non touristy place called Amagase Onsen. Since I have tattoos, it was semi hard finding spots to get the onsen experience. We were already going to Kinosaki Onsen later that week but feeling tired we wanted to stop at Amagase before heading to Hita Japan to try out our very first onsen. But these were really public! Like on the side of the river that locals use that were also coed and didn't discriminate against tattoos. So when we got there we saw that one of the 7 along the banks was empty. Not for long though! As we made our way down to it, two little old local men also had the same idea and there we were, all 4 of us, in our birthday suits and while I was a little nervous, it all melted away as soon as we made small broken conversations with them. What an experience! We're heading to Hakone in Feb 2025 and really excited for it. I grew up watching anime and that's where Evangelion was also based off of in the series. Awesome video!

I would definitely visit Okunoin and the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi at the end of the walking path at Okunoin. Next, the Danjo Garan Temple complex. After that, the Daimon gate. That is the top three that can be done in a day. You can grab a tourist map when you get to Mt. Koya with ideas on how to spend the rest of the day.

How did you buy all the tickets at once? It seems like a lot of trains and buses and worrying about getting lost
@MMTravelJournal
@MMTravelJournal 7 ай бұрын
It turned out pretty easy. We bought round trip tickets for everything at the ticket counter in the Namba station in Osaka. We just pointed on our phone where we wanted to go, and they took care of the rest. They gave use a couple of envelopes with the tickets. From the Namba station, you take the Nan Kai train to gokurakabashi station, there’s no other options but the cable car you’re supposed to get on. The bus waits for everybody at the top. It’s a very short bus ride to the different spots in Koyasan, and the buses run frequently. You can hop on and off all you want. It’s much easier than it sounds.
