Since you don't read much sci-fi, definitely "Hyperion". It's like "Canterbury Tales", with perhaps the most terrifying creature ever created in the genre.

While I like the casting of Hammond I didn't really like the direction Spielberg took Hammond in. I would say the movie and the books both have their pros and cons and it would be hard to say either one is truly better than the other.

This is not a criticism but it is a correction. Yossarian was a bombardier, not a pilot. Catch-22 has been my favourite book since I read it almost 20 years ago.

Le Carre is fun. The three body problem is badly written, and the philosphy it spreads is reactionary/unprogressive. The third book I don't know.

The only book that comes in my mind for autum is Vineland by Pynchon. And (because my Shakespear-heart is so wounded by you guys, who only know Romeo and Juliet) I'd like to recommend a movie: "Chimes at midnight" by Orson Welles. It combines some of the best Shakespeare-plays around my favorite, King Henry IV, part 2. Against the day - this will be great. I was so in the book, that I had to pause reading it for a year (really), because ... something happend to a character I liked the most ... around page ... 200 ... I was so shocked.

Hey I have a question that I think would be fun for you guys to answer. I'll be leaving to work in Antarctica next month for 6 months during the Austral Summer. That means I'll be experiencing 24 hrs of daylight as well as extreme cold and remoteness. (The closest tree will be thousands of miles away) What do you guys think I should read while I'm there? I like to tie my memories of a place to a book and want to have the right book to do that with while I'm there. Something to magnify the thoughts and feelings of a desolate and harsh landscape. Thanks!

For me, Fall books are either horror (Halloween) or stories that take place on college campuses (the beginning of the Fall semester). I wasn't crazy about the LaRocca stories. The Dalkey edition of The Tunnel is due on July 1, 2025. Yikes!
@harlan1410 күн бұрын
Yeah, Fall books are horror, but not of the blood and guts kind.(for me at least) Real life ican be brutal enough as it is I mean..Books like October Country by Ray Bradbury, (or his Dandelion Wine, for the summer), Songs of A Dead Dreamer by Thomas Ligotti , and certain stories by Lovecraft have this welcome melancholy chill. Ah..the beauty of good old, blood- curdling tales!
@harlan1410 күн бұрын
..So, Natural Causes definitely caught my attention, and will try to find it through my local bookseller. The Melancholy of Resistance I had heard of , but now I 'm definitely going to read it. Andy' s right- Stoner IS overrated. Between the Fires also sounds good, and then I'll go bankrupt! (happy to) Autumn is rapidly vanishing from the Mediterranean too. It's distressing Have a lovely autmn guys! Pick apples, look at the sunset, and talk to the skeleton beside you!

Have you guys watched Severence on Apple TV? It’s not based on a book and in my opinion it’s one of the greatest artistic achievements in the last decade, and easily one of the best tv shows of all time. Many many layers of mystery and satire. Love three body problem but wouldn't recommend it. the sci fi concepts are the central focus and main appeal. And while I love the first book it is ultimately a prologue for the main story in book 2/3.
