Is so simple that is ridiculous, hope everyone build batteries like this, simple and easy to replace, just like a pallet to be handle by any forklift.

I rotated only the right wheel ball-joint and it stopped squeaking for the past month. I used a grease injection kit with water-resistant grease as well as the rotation on the left wheel ball-joint. I'll report if one is worse than the other. I had tried rejuvenating the bushings alone on the left side and that was insufficient. This solution saved me well over a thousand dollars.

The only thing that makes me sad about this motor is the fact that there is a huge "motherboard" inside the gears making it very inaccessible. Why not put all the muscle in one part and the chip on another separately, completely protected and easy to repair.

Follow up: no need to remove wheel, use a needle and syringe, or drop the control arm. Lift the car by the rail, pull the spring clip off the ball joint boot, use an oil can to fill the boot with oil, replace spring clip. WD40 is a terrible lubricant BTW.

I recently saw a tear down of an electric RAV4, apparently the drive unit is made by Tesla. That was the first time I realized that the motor bearings are sealed bearings. It looks like the model 3 drive units use sealed bearings also? This means all of these electric drive unit motor bearings will fail in a fairly short period. I think that should be pointed out in these videos. If I buy an electric, I would want a car that lasts at least 200k miles with good maintenance, such as changing drive unit oil. Apparently that won’t do much good on these systems?

Wanted to thank you for this video. I have a model 3 with 150k miles on it and my rack just started sticking. After watching your video and another on how to pull it I decided to do it myself and completely take it apart and re grease it all and it worked perfect. No more issues. Ty so much.

My 2019 M3 started to squeak every time i turned the steering wheel. This is on the front driver side. I bought a grease gun and needle to inject grease into the boot of the control arm. After 50 miles of driving, the squeaking has reduced quite a bit, but it is still there. I heard Tesla was charging people between $500‐$1000 to replace the control arm. That's why i was hesitant to call Tesla and went with the DIY route to inject grease. Out of curiosity, i made a service call to Tesla. They quoted me $225 to replace the front left and right control arm assembly. FYI, I'm long out of warranty. For $225 with labor included, i think it's a great deal. I'm in California. So, why is there a big discrepancy in price for Tesla to replace the control arm?

Thanks for the insightful video. I've got a sailing yacht, and we've taken out the diesel engine. Now, onto the next phase (pun intended): getting an electric motor, batteries, solar panels, and so on. It's a shame Mitch isn't in Australia; otherwise, I'd definitely hire him to assist in converting and installing a Tesla motor in my gorgeous 40-year-old, 18-meter sailing yacht. Mitch, you make this seem effortless. How about a trip to Australia, mate? 😊
