Wow! What a journey! We DO buy so much fabric at the start, yeah? 😂 I just cut out three camp shirts for my brothers and Dad and I’m not feeling it anymore. Sewing for myself is much more exciting. For the Burda Magazine sizes, there is a chart. If I have a top, I go by bust size, if it’s bottoms, I use waist and hip measurements. For some reason Burda doesn’t use decimal points and it looks confusing to me.

@blufaerie Right? 🤣 We all went through this phase at the beginning of our journey for sure lol! I could not agree more - sewing for myself is THE best feeling ever! Thank you so much for your tips on how to choose a size with Burda magazines! And thanks a lot for watching 🤗🤗

Lovely video thanks for making it. Tracing patterns is my least favourite part too, so I don't do it! I go for PDFs and have the pattern printed in a couple of sizes. Happy to hem your garments for you if you do all my gathering ! xxx

@susiewhittles2798 Thanks a lot Susie 🤗😊 I am fully considering just cutting into my printed patterns as well but choosing the wrong size is always a worry so your tip of printing a couple of sizes is a really good one for pdf patterns! Thank you, I will definitely keep that one in mind 😊 thanks for the offer ahah it's so funny how you are not the first sewist to tell me that you would trade gathering for hemming every single time, we should all leave near each other ahah xx

Always always enjoy your videos 😃. You had me laughing a few times. I’ve been sewing for a long long time. It’s very enjoyable and relaxing for me, even if I’m working on something a little difficult. I agree with you, learning to choose fabric that you love and looks good on you helps you not to buy fabric unnecessarily. I have a nice size fabric and pattern stash! I tell myself it’s because I’ve been sewing for so long but I know that’s not true 😂. I have gotten to the point that the fabric has to be screaming my name so loud before I purchase it 🤣 and it must be on sale. You’ve accomplished a lot in 3 years of sewing! Keep up the good work and you look so beautiful in your garments 🪡🧵👗🥰

It is so thoughtful of you to give your wise advice for beginners. I can't bear not to see the true colour and feel of fabric before buying so I don't shop on line so I would be interested in videos of market and shop fabric buying opportunities- even though I should not buy any more fabric. I don't even have a partner who acts as a curb on my spending as he says "Go on, buy it if you like it"

A couple of other options are Legend Textiles who are a good one for cheaper fabrics, ive also shopped at Fabric Land in person and online and they're pretty good, a lot of quilting stuff tho. I don't really have much local to me apart from a small stall in a local market who has mostly quilting cottons and Hobbycraft of course. I have moved away from Minerva, I did sign up to their annual discount thing but I just wasn't shopping there, it is good for checking what people have made with the fabric or the pattern. I shop at Simple Life Fabrics mostly and I think Sarah is great value for money. I also search through the remnants in the shops I consider more expensive like Guthrie Ghani and fabric godmother so I can have 'the good stuff' on occasion😂 I do prefer trying to shop in person if I ever get the chance though 😊

@TheWillowtreeGreen oh thanks a lot for sharing! I've never heard about these shops so will check them all out! I very rarely shop on Minerva too so agree with you on the discount as I never subscribed. Also agree that there is nothing like going to the shops and feel the fabrics! Thanks a lot 😊 xx

Hi Dee, Debbie here😊 in the cheaper category, Knighton fabrics have a website now. I haven’t bought from them yet, Mandy from Make it Sew has recommended them so when I am ready for more fabric I will look. You are so lucky to have a market with fabric stalls near you. When I started sewing in the 70s I always bought from our Market here in Southend… the market closed a long time ago. I have started visiting fabric shops around the country when away in our camper van and have recently visited Roy’s Material world in Leicester and Barry’s in Birmingham. I like Pound Fabrics on line too😊. Have a good Weekend x x

I normally shop from both shops at the Stitch Festival in London. Thanks a lot again xx

I agree with buying more fabric for tall people. I'm almost as tall as you, and I hear dome people saying they made a little gathered dress from less than 2 metres. How!?! I almost always need at least 3 metres to make a basic straight cut dress or jumpsuit. If I want gathering or wide sleeves, etc. I need at least 4 metres. So I like getting 5 metres as well.

Lovely fabrics eager to see them made up. On the issue of transparency, I believe you might be confusing transparent with translucent. Most of the fabrics you showed are translucent, meaning light will show through but you will not see details of any kind. Transparent is akin to looking through your window. A very sheer chiffon is closer to transparent...if you hold it up I would be able to see your face. Unless your viscose is white or has very light ground you will not have to line them. Yes, I agree, a lined garment looks more expensive but not all those fabrics will need a lining. And, yes, holding them in front of sunlight window will make even a denim look like it needs a lining. Hope this helps.
@SyKnife2 ай бұрын
Slips have gone out of style, but I second your recommendation. Also very handy are simple full slips in very light, polished cotton, very lightweight linen, or silk. They make clothing lay smoothly all over. Any cami pattern can be made into a slip. If you’re always cold in the winter, a slip layer under your dress really makes a difference. In summer, a very lightweight linen helps absorb sweat.
@kadycrea2 ай бұрын
Oh thank you so much! This is actually really helpful as I did wonder whether sitting where I was in my living room and looking at the fabrics right in front of the window was the reason why everything looked like it needed a lining lol 😅 your explanation makes perfect sense and I will double check this by just putting the fabric on me in front of a mirror basically. Think that would make a lot more sense 😅! Thank you so much for your comment 🤗 🥰
@kadycrea2 ай бұрын
@DeniseSyrett Thanks a lot for your comment, I also think that for fabrics that do need a lining I might go down the slip option rather than lining the dress as I could reuse the slip for other dresses so might be well worth the investment 😊 thank you 🥰🥰!

Right? lol glad we agree it would be so stressful 🤣! Thanks a lot 🥰🥰, I will look into that properly as think you are right some of them might be OK and it was quite a sunny day when I filmed this so need to double check before bothering lining them up for sure!

rather than lining dresses you may want to consider making or buying some half slips. They are very easy to make, just run elastic through a waist fold much like a skirt and it’s fun to get fancy with laces at the bottom. I make some slips full of waist gathers and others that are not as full, both types in very light weight fabrics. Personally I like my slips in a deep beige color that looks nice under any color dress. They stitch up in no time at all and are much easier than dealing with lining each dress.
