Give Credit Where Credit Is DUE. 1939: "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is a song originally written and recorded by Solomon Linda and the Night Birds under the title "Mbube" for the South African Gallo Record Company. Linda's original was written in Zulu. 1961: the English version's lyrics were written by George David Weiss and recorded by the Tokens. The massive profits from the ripped-off white version were never shared with Solomon Linda. The Tokens NEVER acknowledged or paid tribute to the original black writers & performers. It's time they did.

The Chordettes were active from 1946 up to 1963, when they disbanded. This clip is from a TV show, it is not from 1958, it is a celebration, from - say - 2002/2003. None of the founding band members is present, however Lynn Evans is: that nice wonderful lady that is pointed more often by the camera. Lynn joined the group in 1952, and she was a member during the peak period of the Chordettes: Mr. Sandman (1955) and Lollypop (1958) were their major hits, while a dozen of their songs were in the charts, the last in 1960. The original 1946 members were Janet Ertel (1913-1988), Alice Spielvogel (1925-1981), Dorothy "Dottie" Schwartz (1927-2016) and Jinny Osborn/Lockard (1927- 2003). Spielvogel was replaced by Carol Buschmann (1927-2023), her sister-in-law, in 1947. In 1952, Lynn Evans (1924-2020) replaced Schwartz. In 1953, Margie Needham temporarily replaced Osborn (who was having a baby), though Osborn later returned to the group. Nancy Overton (1926-2009) joined the group just for live performances in 1957 after Janet Ertel, who was older than the other members, retired from touring, although she continued to perform on recorded material and TV. Those ladies were all married with children, they all were adorable. So the group line-up during the success years (1952-1960) was Janet Ertel, Jinny Osborn, Carol Bushmann, Lynn Evans. The original b/w clips available on KZbin include those four ladies. There were some “reunions” the following decades, a relevant one happened in 1988 (footage available on KZbin). This clip here is probably the last one, in 2002/2003, with the adorable Lynn Evans on stage. God bless them all. Janet is my favourite, but I’ve loved them all. And I still do: their music will *never* die.

Back in the fifties we had a car club and everyone named their car after a song. I named my car for a girl friend who later became my wife. What a great time to be young. We dragged the main street in downtown Amarillo, Texas long before the movie "American Graffiti". What a time for this country and what a time to be a kid. Thanks, for this one.
