I’m trying to teach my sister a FPS and I think the hardest thing for a non-gamer that gamers take for granted is coordination with the two analog sticks to balance movement and aim (looking) at the same time. I see her a lot moving then stopping to look and aim. It’s a very separate process for her, those two things. I am struggling how to be a good and patient teacher because I literally don’t remember how I learned that it was so long ago

I love the work you're doing. My Fiance has been wanting to play an FPS (Borderlands) with me but has a hard time navigating the First Person aspect. She's great at 3rd person though (she loves the Arkham series). This tutorial seems PERFECT for her getting use to not having the extra peripheral views of 3rd person. I was curious, is there a way to choose a controller for the FPS tutorial? The controller seems to work in moving and jumping (with "A" on xbox) but the interact doesn't seem to work nor are the constraints of the tutorial working. Is it simply not configured for a controller? Keyboard and mouse seem a bit too jarring a leap for her. Thanks again for your work!

A few suggestions, from someone who played the hell out of games that actually taught you things: F for flashlight, crouching, the dreaded jump/crouch, and grenades.

I have a non-gamer wife who easily gets motion sick in 3D video games. With your experience and insight into development, I would LOVE for there to be more resources on how to overcome this. We have tried many things. I am going to try max gamma (one of the few things we haven’t tried). But, please know this is a significant issue for many which probably needs its own research and results video. I wish I was wealthy as I would love to fund your progress. How about Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga? It’s aimed mainly at children so the assumption is less experience. Fun platformer with humor. There isn’t much penalty for dying. There’s some 3rd person shooting in it.

you know what I gotta see? brain activity. I want to get a bunch of science people and do like. a legitimate experiment to see the difference in brain activity between an experienced player, a new player being given the regular game, and a new player given one of these things before the regular game.

Why not make the pop-ups like the in-game ones... Helpy! You could also have Helpy guide users into adjusting those graphics settings and telling them "If you start to feel sick, it's no problem. Just hit pause and take a little break, we'll be here when you're feeling up to more fun! 😀"

That sounds lovely! The problem is limited time, and there are only two popups in the game. It would be great if I could mod popups into RUIN like that, but again I had limited time. Thank you for the suggestion though!

do you know didactics or not? Other games shortcomings of not communicating to "non Gamers" is failure on your part. There are research papers on mario about this. You didn't improve, rather engaging your bias. This had potential to extend this genre, maybe even popularize it, but I think, if people are just a little critical they too would cut through the bs and skip it. I will make fun of you if you continue to act this low level, maybe more...

Motion sickness issues are such a massive hurdle for some of these first person games, I wonder what other adjustments could be made to help deal with it. Have you already decided what kind of video you are looking to make next?
