How many students are typically in your small group when you do them?

Usually 5 or less. Any more than that and I feel like you can't give the attention needed to each child.

I know this is three years ago, however I use the toy pinwheels that you could use in a garden to help them take those deep breaths. They’re all eager to try the breaths that way because we use conscious discipline in our classroom.

This exactly how I make my felt stories. I've got the count down songs like 5 little ducks, turtles, elephants, frogs, but also stories like Abiyoyo, Caps for Sale, I was walking down the road, Goldilocks, BINGO, Harry the dirty Dog and more. Still working on making more.

I love the idea of providing materials to bind a book in the Writing Center! I provide lots of opportunities for my students to illustrate and write in that center, but did not have a way for them to physically turn it into a book. I am going to add this! As for having a variety of materials to write on, I have had issues with providing journals and note pads, since they are highly consumable supplies. I’ve found that (despite 1,000 reminders and modeled examples of how to use them appropriately) certain students will write on every page in one day! I cannot keep up with replacing them at the pace in which they are used. How did you avoid this when you were in the classroom, or what tips do you have to prevent this from happening?

Hi, thanks for this video. It was really helpful presentation and a really great idea. I want to create a short project for six year old children to make 'purposeful' mothers day presents . I have lots of felt, and small canvases. I have no velcro. I do have sandpaper though. If I stick the sandpaper to the canvas would it act like velcro?! I'm about to find out. ... It is difficult to obtain velcro in my area.

I think Question of the day can be challenging to make purposeful and also genuine. (Kids not just answering what a friend said) One thing I started this year was using a recordable button (bought on amazon) I record the question and then kids can come do it during Play Centers time. This way they can re-play the question and its not all done with waiting time during large group. Kids who didn't do it during play can do it during large group. I have a masking tape rectangle on my dry erase board and then name magnets.

Thank you for the helpful tips and suggestions for using Creative Curriculum and thank you for sharing your planning template as well :) ! Tomorrow is the first day of school and my district has adopted the curriculum. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I have a better understanding now. However, I am still wondering how the observations/documentation will work in real time with kids.

I need to declutter, too. I have a really hard time getting rid of stuff. I gave a bunch of the Literacy stuffed animals away. I left teaching last year and thought I was going to slowly move away from teaching. My boss asked me to stay on 3 days a week as a sub. 😂 I ended up working 4 days a week and ended up taking over a classroom until the end of the year. School just ended today and my goal is to slowly go through things in my basement. You are motivating me.

I love making items for literacy (finger plays) and video the kids and sending them to parents. I love how the students numbered the shoes. I’ve used different shoe sizes in the winter for them to pretend to ice skate, along with a popcorn machine that I made out of a box and filled it with packaging peanuts.
