Yes I've heard of folks using a stud welder for heat shrinking, and folks using propane or butane torches. But in my opinion, propane and butane torches don't get hot enough, fast enough, to do the best job. But I understand you use what you have. There are small bottle sets out there for folks that want an oxy/acty torch but don't want to buy the big bottles. Good luck!

Yes, the filler is a little deeper than I'd like in a few places, namely the patch panel's curved arears at the shells lower corners - which I had to completely reshape due to their terrible fitment, and the weld seam at the top of the patch which shrank when I welded it. I cut off most of the filler I put on - yes I put it on heavy to avoid wiping multiple times and chasing the final surface. Thanks for the comment.

@@cookstersgarage3908I do enjoy them. It's probably because these skills (and many others) are being snuffed out for reasons that all eventually boil down to greed. The disposable single use mind set is fucking up our planet and the people on it. The most basic skills that allow someone to fix, repair and restore are requirements for the problem-solving that leads to invention and the creation that allows you to provide for yourself. It's just not good for business.

thanks! Yep seam sealer is a pain anywhere on the exterior, but it has to be done and the neater the job the better it will look under the paint job. That's why I switched to the 2 part epoxy sealers for exterior seams - you get a better job with them vs the one part urethanes. IMO anyway....

Hey, sorry I'm late answering. The Omni/PPG epoxy primer I use is good for 72 hrs with no sanding, so you can prime or apply body filler over it with no sanding in the first 72 hrs. It's a chemical bond, and a very good one at that. I've used this primer for 30+ years and it's good stuff. After 72 hrs you do need to scuff it. I use 80 or 180 grit, depending on what I'm doing. There is no harm in sanding it in the first 72 hrs if that makes you feel more comfortable.

With enough experience, you *can* feel the highs and lows. Which, is great. But it doesn't photograph well, and is difficult for a beginner. A guide coat would help a lot, visually. Personally, I love the dry guide coat...if you've never tried it, check it out!

Little trick if yall want. Add 10:1 fiberglass resin to your body filler, makes it creamier and the hardener works the same on it. Easier to sand lays on flatter.
@cookstersgarage3908
@cookstersgarage3908 7 ай бұрын
I have seen that trick before but I've never tried it. FYI The Rage Ultra filler is already fairly creamy so personally I would not thin it anymore. Other fillers maybe yes. Also Evercoat makes a resin called Plastic Honey that may or not be the same resin as fiberglass. Thanks!

@cookstersgarage3908
@cookstersgarage3908 8 ай бұрын
Yes that is a problem, you do need access to the backside of the panel. Sometimes you can cut out an inner panel, say an inner door or fender panel - then weld it back when complete. So yes, you have to account for that. You can also make or buy tools such as a "dolly on a stick" and use them o place a dolly into hard to reach areas. Thanks for the comment!

Whats the point in a 32 frame if its hidden under runningboards? Sounds like a fun project!
@cookstersgarage3908
@cookstersgarage3908 8 ай бұрын
Thanks, a valid point. But, I intend on using 32 style fenders and running boards, or modifying my model A fenders to fit (32 style). So no 31 running boards or aprons. You might ask at that point why build a 31 instead of a 32. Easy answer is I have a 31, couldn't find a 32 in my price range.
@scottbenke7182
@scottbenke7182 8 ай бұрын
Good luck with the build. Research that T5 transmission, you really should start with the WC or World Class T5z. You can use either a cable or hydraulic clutch. For the roof section, I have read where guys have repurposed roof skins from vans, that only need slight modifications. Those 351C's are relatively heavy, plan your front suspension accordingly.
@cookstersgarage3908
@cookstersgarage3908 8 ай бұрын
Yes, the T5 is a WC from a Mustang. Probably will use a hydraulic clutch. I have heard of the roof skin idea, that's one of my thoughts for trying this. I've already bought the front spring but not the shocks so I'll have to see how it sits when I get that far. I am going to use aluminum heads and intake, so that will save a few pounds. Thanks!

Yup I’m still here Wes! Merry Christmas! As far as the wood, that car being a slant window sedan it is mostly all steel inner structure, that’s part of the reason I’d bought it in the first place. Most of the wood is just for the roof skin/insert and the floorboards. Parts for the windshield area are the same as the Vicky’s from the same year. On the fenders, since you’re using a 32 style frame, you might see about using 32 fenders and running boards because they don’t use an apron to cover the frame like the model A fenders do since the reveal is made into the frame, just a thought. The only issue you might run into is the rear fender mounting at the body, but I’m sure you will figure it out. As always, you can reach out to me about it if you have any questions.

I noticed in your other video that you were MIG welding. Is the skin also MIG welded? I also have some body panels that moved quite a bit as I MIG welded, but I'm concerned they'll crack if I planish them. Did you see any cracking issue? Thanks. Dan

First, sorry I took so long to respond. Been very busy, my apologies. No I did not have any cracking of the welds or anywhere else. I am aware this can be an issue, but I had no issues. I did get full penetration on my welds, plus I hand planished slightly while I was welding - whether that helped or not I'm not sure. Good luck!

Great video 🙂... Does my understanding/attempt at explaining the process as you do it with the following ASCII art make sense? (A) Before heating a high or low spot: _____-------------------_____ , (B) fully heated spot rises: _______------aa^^A^^aa-----________ , (C) hammering around to gather the metal into a smaller bump: _______aATAa________ , (D) after knocking down the bump: -----------≈-=≈==≈=-≈------------ , (E): quenching the metal will make it contract and stretch, now being a bit thicker in the middle: ----------------=====----------------.
@cookstersgarage3908
@cookstersgarage3908 10 ай бұрын
yes, that looks right. It's always fun to watch someone do this for the first time. They're usually amazed at just how far the metal grows when heated with the torch. Then after hammering and quenching, one can actually feel the metal shrink down. It's a cool process I'm glad the "ole timers" figured out many, many years ago. Thanks for the comment!

@cookstersgarage3908
@cookstersgarage3908 11 ай бұрын
never tried that, but it might. If it cuts steel then yes I agree, it might work. The thing you DON'T want to do is try to heat with a flame that is not hot enough, all that will do is induce warping and create more damage that has to be fixed later with a proper setup.
@mrman1536
@mrman1536 11 ай бұрын
Always heat the low spots . Have a rag soaked with water.allow the low spot to expand over the hight of level, take the heat away and watch the steel to shrink till level and quench straight away. The quench holds steel where you wanted it . Slapping steel between dolly and hammer expands the diameter of the panel . Practice makes perfect.
@cookstersgarage3908
@cookstersgarage3908 11 ай бұрын
I've always used the technique I described. That technique was even taught in a trade school instruction book for sheet metal repair back in the 50s/60/70s, when you could still heat shrink factory steel. But, use which ever technique that works for you and yes I agree practice does make perfect.
