A miserable day for me. At the time of the show, I did not drive (more accurately, I REFUSED TO LEARN TO DRIVE-thus, my penance for that was to rely on others to tote me around if I wanted to do something like, for instance, see a concert 25 miles north of my home). So, in order to attend the show (originally scheduled for what was then known as The Baltimore Civic Center - now on it's 24th or 25th re-branding), I had to buy a ticket for my friend, who would drive us. Well, the big day came (it was a Saturday) and I was in my local library looking at the Baltimore newspapers (we had The Sun and the Hearst-owned News American back then) and I wanted to see if there were any articles regarding the upcoming show. Well, there was....so I read through it. When I finished, I glanced to one side of the newspaper to see an 1/8th page sized ad for the concert. Then...I saw it! "NOTE NEW VENUE" was splashed across the ad, much to my chagrin. Remember kiddies, there was no internet in 1981 (well there WAS the DARPA-NET, of which we weren't supposed to know about). So, I ran home, called the operator for the number to the Baltimore Civic Center box office (a long distance phone call then, folks), called the venue and found out that NOT ONLY WERE MY 6th row floor seat tickets no good, I would not only have to (a) drive to the Civic Center to get my money back, I'd have to subsequently have to slog through northwest Baltimore (thankfully this was before the city had turned into the abysmal hell hole it is today) to the "NEW" venue (Painter's Mill Music Fair...RIP), to purchase NEW TICKETS. Well, my buddy who was driving was rather irate about all of this extra effort (and who could blame him), but he agreed to pursue this venture and around 2 PM, he showed up at my place and by 3, we managed to get to the Civic Center to cash in my "dead" tickets (total cost about $22, if I recall) and then we made another 40 minute trek up to Northern Parkway and out to MD 140 (Reisterstown Road) and found Painter's Mill Music Fair (I knew where it was because my brother worked at the radio station directly behind the venue, and you could spot the transmitter towers from about 1/2 a mile away). When we got to the ticket booth, the nice lady said that the single show was now TWO shows. And I thought, "GREAT", but my glee was dashed when she said that the early show was sold out and the there were only 6 scattered tickets left for the late show....ALL IN THE BACK ROW IN THE UPPER THROES of the theater. Well, stupid belligerent me didn't want to here it (after all, I initially had 6th row floor seats), so I told my friend, "Forget it, let's go". On the way back, my friend reluctantly had to ask me for gas money (and he drove a Pontiac Firebird which got about 8 mph, or so it seemed). So, I bought us lunch and paid for lunch and 8 gallons of gas. I came home with $2 of my $22 dollars! That night, I swore I would NEVER go to another concert again. Between 1984 and 1988, I attended about 20 Zappa concerts and lectures...so much for that threat! Thanks for posting the board tape!!!!

It's supposed to sound like the soundtrack to he'll! But starts off sounding like a rolling stones song.

Tommy Mars really added a very special and distinctive sound to the music of this Zappa era imo. My brain explodes when I listen to the "Tinseltown Rebellion" album. It's quite messy.

Nice bit of crude early MOI improv at the end on Handsome Cabin Boy. first heard this on a bootleg called Time Sandwich... it needs an official release

Was just listening to your upload of the full live version of "If Only She Woulda", went to check if the full show was uploaded and you did not dissapoint. You can always rely on Zappa bootleg archivists to be awesome.

As killer as the solo Steve Vai plays in the album is, Frank's solo here is simply immaculate. No one did it like him.

One of the great pieces of music. Zappa was the master at fusing high and low culture, but I feel this piece ( 4 pieces really ) is the best example of that. He had a musical mind like no other, ever. Constantly touring and then in his motel room in the wee hours with a giant piece of blank orchestral manuscript paper, carefully placing all the dots on it in the appropriate places, he knew exactly what he was doing, and had a real passion for it.

Nice but prefer original. Love the lounge piano and fret less bass playing . This kind of ruins that .

There are some good elements and some bad ones. As regards the general execution, it is excellent. The orchestra is impeccable and cannot be faulted. The soprano and chorus is also perfect. However, the performances by Zachary Wilder and Nicholas Scot cannot replicate Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan [AKA Flo & Eddie]. As a long time fan of Zappa and 200 Motels, Wilder and Scot's performance is uncomfortable to listen to. Similarly with Lionel Painter's attempts to replace Theodor Bikel and Jimmy Carl Black. Lonesome Cowboy Burt is an appalling and uncomfortable listen. The main rock band do a fairly good attempt to knock out the likes of Magic Fingers, but again they don't do Zappa's music justice. A good attempt overall but I'd have gone for a decent rock ensemble to accompany the compitant orchestra. If Dweezil had stepped into the fray this could have been outstanding. Orchestra and soprano, 10/10, rock ensemble 6/10, main singers Wilder, Scot and Painter, 2/10, not so much for their ability to sing as it is clear they can, but for not being the right people for the respective parts.

FZFT, we don't need another release of songs that have been released and released and released! I understand, "save your powder" for when you need it (see Resolver/Brutality) but . . . .
