Can you wash hand-smocked clothes? Or would you have to iron the pleats back in every time?

I have seen a number of you tubers making this dress, and your has got to be the best explaining the pattern construction. I’ve had my eye on this pattern for a couple of years, but always thought it to be too low on the bodice, AND never saw it as being for a beginner. After listening to your tips, seeing how the dress fit on you perfectly I hope to buy it this week at JoAnn’s since they will be on sale. Now I need to look for a video on how you altered the bodice.

Bless you for making this pattern available for free!!! I'm trying to avoid spending too much on this new hobby (sewing/historical sewing) until I know it'll stick (I'm one of those people who drop hobbies in favor of new ones too often). This is gorgeous and I can't wait to try it

As a portuguese decent 1st generation. I always love to see other people recreating my father's cultural styles. It makes me feel like I can create a style resembling my ancestors' style back in the day. They're such practical and beautiful styles. Yes, please do more!! ❤

Thank you so much for this!!! I think these are what they used in the red dress from outlander and I’ve always been so curious how they did it! Also. I think, vocally, you sound like Amy Adams. Delightful! Can’t wait to try this and watch more of your videos!

So impressed with your hand sewing. What a beautiful skirt you have created. You mention in the beginning suggestions for fabric and give some indication of density, but I wonder if you happen to know the approximate gsm or oz/yd of the cotton you bought at Joanns? I am in Australia so hoping to find something similar here.

i wonder if i’d be able to make a dress with the skirt being pleated like this…. since i’m hour glass shaped i would probably need it to be laced up in the back that way the skirt opening lines up and i don’t have to shimmy in and out of it.

Thank you for this tutorial! I am making an apron based on this with linen. Do you have any recommendations for how to fold and press in a quarter inch without the folded edge looking all wavy? I am relatively new to sewing, but I do want the narrow seam! Would you use an iron to press linen or just finger press? Thank you!
@Pour_La_Victoire
@Pour_La_Victoire 14 күн бұрын
Hello and welcome! I would use an iron on a high setting to press the linen - the fibers will relax with the heat and the fabric will be easier to fold. Some linens have a tendency to unravel due to their shorter fibers, so try a sample to make sure you have enough seam allowance to withstand unraveling as you work with it.

I googled 'cartridge pleats' and found myself here. Thanks for the detailed explanation of the process and the historical overview. I am from Nigeria and cartridge pleats don't catch out women's fancy here. African contemporary is in vogue here and because it has a lot of gathering, like cartridge pleats, I thought incorporating cartridge pleats instead of the usual gathering would definitely be a welcome development, ancient and modern sort of. ❤ Thanks for your time. Initially, I thought the pleated fabric would be sewn to the waist band or bodice. Now I know it's hand stitched.

I never would have chosen this pattern based on the package or line drawings but you have taught me how to look at things differently. What a valuable and beautiful pattern!! ❤ you just got a new subscriber! And you got me thinking...you could also make a cummerbund or add a wide purchased belt to extend the look. Your first make, you could embellish the neckline with embroidery...even if it was the same shade as the fabric, I think that would be a subtle but nice touch.

I love how you talk about replacing the binding at the hem and being able to adjust sizes if need be. I know that's how the cared for their garments "back in the day", but it is refreshing in the ocean of fast fashion that some people treat their garments with care. It's inspiring me to be more considerate of this as I slowly start to make my own clothes. And thank you for a good tutorial!
