They can sure be! I've modded mine a bit though, it's now half open ...the lower portion is closed up and has Eminence speakers, the upper half is half open and has the original Celestions. It opens up nicely that way, and those Eminences have a lot of low end kick.

Hey man, about to pickup a 50combo and do this exact mod. Do you think that cathode follower exists on the Origin 50? (The one that you altered for this sound)? Also, how does the “feel” and dynamics of your modded Origin compare to the legit JCM amps you have? People always talk about that kind of stuff with those amps (tone aside). I can’t afford one but curious still :). Thanks for all the help btw. You rock
@deeaa
@deeaa Жыл бұрын
The preamp is the same in both AFAIK, it's well worth looking at videos of both mods to clarify things and connections. So yeah same resistor there. The Origin is clearly more organic sounding with a looser, softer low end and has clearly more sag and liveliness. I guess that's due to less powerful output transferformer. 800s are much more piercing and hard feeling, more midrangey strong. But I think the saggy feel is kinda what happens when you really push a JCM so hard the speakers start to wobble, or use a Variac with one, so it's merely good. Just sounds louder than it actually is.
@vin9976
@vin9976 Жыл бұрын
Did you just do the standard HF mod or does it also include the José Clipping mod and choke as well?
@deeaa

It's otherwise standard but with lower gain by using a different cathode follower resistor. Was shooting for more like stock 2203/3 sound.

Hey man, this is amazing. Maybe this is what the JCM800 mod should have been? I like the Headfirst JCM800 mod, but it doesn't have that same mid-range or bass tightness. That just defining mid-low end that makes those amps amazing. BUT...I actually think what you've done seems to avoid that pit fall and gets you that awesome AC/DC sound (which is the best). I'm guessing tube-screamer could get you into hotrod JCM800 territory too if you needed that right? Is there a video showing how to do this mod? I'm more computer technical (I can replace motherboards and batteries etc) but never done a lot of soldering to a schematic. Also, what tweak did you make to make it not-hot?
@deeaa
@deeaa Жыл бұрын
It's almost exactly the normal HF mod, but I experimented with the cathode follower resistor value as well as the other resistor for the boost mode. I'm not sure any more what values did I use for either however, but I believe the R62 was about 10K or a bit more instead of 2.7. I also omitted the bright cap.
@vin9976
@vin9976 Жыл бұрын
@@deeaa lol oh no. You hit the holy grail and don't have the values. What kind of tools do I need to do this? (thanks for this!) Its awesome you have real experience with the original Amps too. That's huge. We all think our amp sounds good...until it's played next to the real deal. I've got a DSL40CR...its cool and versatile. But...it doens't have a classic tone (modern-ish) and I don't get my AC/DC tones!
@deeaa
@deeaa Жыл бұрын
@@vin9976 I'm actually quite sure now it was 10K for the cathode follower. Of course, speaker is way important as well. This clip was done with a WGS ET65 which is a great speaker much like classic Marshall G12-65 and T-75. FWIW, I've gotten some very killer ACDC sounds with a 40CR. Just use the clean channel, turn it well up and run a HOT alnico humbucker into it and play it hard, properly driving the pick into the strings and it's gold. Really great tones, some of the best around IMO. Apply some Boss OD1 with just a little gain and more boost or maybe a TS pedal according to taste for some more drive for leads, and you won't need anything else. In fact the 40CR is one of the best Marshalls I know for the money. Just forget the dirt channel and squeeze the clean side and it can do wonders.

@@vin9976 and as for tools...pretty much all you need is a decent solder iron really and screwdrivers to open it up...and being very careful and going over the HF videos very diligently. It's not hard but definitely not something to do for your first solder jobs. Best practice first soldering cables and maybe some pedal kit or something. For me the most difficult part was finding the right components.

Moro Antti! Yt. Lari
@deeaa
@deeaa Жыл бұрын

Did you do the mod yourself? Where can I buy the parts to do it?
@deeaa

Yes, DIY, and since the guide has parts numbers for Mouser electronics, I ordered everything from there. It was somewhst challenging a project to someone like me who hasn't done that much soldering, I had to clarify the instructions to myself several times and make notes and double-check everything, so it took me a couple of nights to do, but it's quite doable even for a hack like me. As long as you're not a complete newbie with a solder gun, it's nothing impossible.

Rentun ruusun? 🤔 Sitä varten olisi tarkoitus noin tehdä, että voisin laulaa siihen uudet sanat 😊 Kiitos paljon.

Just the same on Spotify...you can release 200 songs and next to nobody might ever hear them, unless you spend a lot of money towards marketing them and pushing them onto playlists etc. I do neither. I make music but I don't care to promote it, rather just make more music. Every hour and dollar spent on marketing and promotion is better spent on making a few more songs.
