Two fabulous actors sparring like this, it's what made Trek great back in the day.

If Maxwell wanted to expose the Cardassians, he should have put them in a situation where there's no wiggle room instead of destroying ships along with the evidence.

Sigmund Freud was a fraud that told women who were being molested by their father that it was all in their head and they simply imagined what happened to them, and this is the origin of the Electra complex, which doesn't exist.

Humans in ST developed too quickly. Not even technology, but thinking in galactical spacial dimensions, treating universe as trival arena of war. It would take 1000 years to develop such level or many, many DNA engineering. Like in Dune

All this does is made the the maqui look insufferable, and while his "argument" could have been easily be counter since this is a gotcha on Picard, I assume they didn't since this might piss off the people the Maqui represent. Thank goodness Sisko humble them with two torpedoes loaded with trilithium resin.

Oh shit. It's Warden Norton! Seriously, Bob Gunton is a great actor. Loved in in The Shawshank redemption, Demolition man, and this Star trek TNG episode.

This is the most disgusting, reprehensible, and abhorrent episode of the entire franchise. It ruined this entire show and made me hate the crew of the Enterprise D. They have no problem with the spoonheads committing genocide against the defenseless Native Americans and even help them do it! What happened to the enlightened utopian future from TOS? Is the Federation really that much of a failed state in the TNG era? Rick Berman was a racist pos who despised Native Americans, because he grew up watching westerns where they were portrayed as enemies. This episode goes against everything Gene Roddenberry made Star Trek to be and he would’ve been absolutely appalled to know this is what they turned his beloved show into. Sickening. This episode needs to be decanonized.

I'm surprised that Picard allowed himself to be manipulated by the colonists in this episode. Even if his ancestor had done what they claimed, that's still no reason not to relocate them.

Lot of people seem to be of the misunderstanding that because Picard was trying to "protect the peace" as he was ordered that he didnt believe Maxwells claims. He did. Especially after they discovered the Cardassian ships had sensor blockers to hide their cargo from prying eyes. Picard is fully sympathetic to Maxwells suspiscions. He just doesnt think that entitles him to single handedly declare war on behalf of the Federation and to gain revenge for his family.

Captain Maxwell was correct and was vindicated. History proved him right. The Cardassian/Dominion War consumed nearly 800 Billion lives, and reshaped the face of the Galaxy.

I love how Picard employs the Socratic method. The simply question of "why?". Explain why? Why did you do what you did? Why is that the right choice? Why? Socrates lived thousands of years ago, but the wisdom he expressed was an eternal truth. Just explain why. As humans we can do all manner of things. We can execute unthinkable actions, but in almost every case we are never confronted with the simple question of "why?". Why is it so important that we do this or that? Why is this right, but something else is wrong? Why do we need to do this certain thing right now? When we are confronted with difficult philosophical questions, it really comes down to the simple question of "why?". It may be annoying to answer, but it really does get to the heart of pretty much everything we do as human beings. Why? Why do we do what we do? The answer to that question can lead to the greatest of truths, but also the most horrific of terrors.

The future in Star Trek may feel a little too much like the repeatable mistakes of the past or the present on many occasions like this. It may stain Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic vision even though he wanted Star Trek through its science fiction to address real issues. But at least some episodes like this one can have happy endings to help make us all truly wiser.
@mikebasil48324 ай бұрын
Star Trek has quite frequently had dramas about Star Fleet personnel or Federation citizens feeling compelled, for good or bad reasons, to break the rules. It may get wearisome. But the acting, especially from superb guest stars like Bob Gunton, can help make it all very watchable.

Picard just asking questions while given the military pitch is very nice. Unfortunately large populations of humans just don't do that, they go with the flow and then we have terrible wars to enrich the few at the cost of the many.
