Perhaps the piano was slightly out of tune. Booker is clear and brilliant as always. Time records was known for early hi-fi stereophonic releases. The reverb is a little jarring. A fantastic record of historical importance. st

Your favorite tenor players (Lester Young, Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Michael Brecker, Kirk Whalum, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter) would not exist as the great tenor players that they are if it wasn’t for the pioneering genius of Coleman Hawkins.

I noted that Max Roach and Clifford Brown were the Pair Extraordinaire. I loved to listen to them on songs like Joy Spring.

Clifford and Fats were poets. Like Schubert, both cut short while on the road to immortality. Technique wedded to inspiration. You will not hear their like again.

Great interview with Max - loved that he shared a different perspective on Clifford as being “hard” when it came to being paid, other things I’m sure - paints a fuller picture of the wonderful man.

Surprise me because the reed doesn't sound light enough for trane sounds a hardish reed with more sub tone approach throughout the registers. So it sounds like someone else not Trane mainly for that reed set up. it it is Trane this is not the sound he later favoured he's not fully opening up the work to get it's colours on the horn, but relying more on reed. There is the hollowness in tone from horn but more traditional sounding from what he became. Also it's straight ahead over the changes

This is absolutely tap dance inspired phrasing of the percussion. Are there notes with this? Is it Papa Jo Jones? Could also be a tap dancer - Baby Laurence?

Interviewer sounds like the original Big Lebowski. stoned and stupid But Elvin was great. Articulate and relaxed. He used the word genius in talking about Dave Liebman. Quite a compliment.

And in the authorized biography (by Harry Shapiro) Jack Bruce again singles out Larry Young as "the most musical" person he ever played with.
