There is some debate about who created the first stackable hive and I did not want to get into that debate. Slovenia is the nation that initiated and headed up the declaration of World Bee Day. They chose to honor two men: Joanne's Antonius (Janez Anton) Scopoli (Cavalese 1723 - Pavia 1788) and Anton Jansa (Breznica 1734 - Vienna 1773) Joanne's Antonius (Janez Anton) Scopoli (Cavalese 1723 - Pavia 1788) “Scopoli was the doctor of the mine of Idrija from 1754 to 1769. As an enthusiast natural scientist, he travelled widely in Carniola to become acquainted with its flora and fauna. In 1770 he described the beekeeping methods used in Slovenia in Dissertatio do apibus (“A Treaty on Bees”) In Entomologia cariolica (Vindobonae/Vienna, 1763) Scopoli describes the insects of Carniola and among them the Slovene breed of bees, which he illustrates together with other insect species. This is the first book to mention fertilization of the queen bee outside the beehive.” “Anton Jansa entered the Copper Engraving and Drawing School in Vienna in 17Anton Jansa (Breznica 1734 - Vienna 1773). In 1769 he applied for the post of master beekeeper with the Lower Austrian Economic Association and was accepted. He worked with major success as a beekeeper in Meilding. In 1779 a decree issued by Empress Mary Theresa appointed him officially as instructor of beekeeping and he started teaching beekeeping in the Viennese Augarten. The essence of Jansa’s beekeeping was the preservation of bee colonies after the honey was removed in autumn. Jansa’s first book Abdhandling vom Schwarmen der Bienen (“A Treaty on Bee Swarming”) was published in March 1771. (Slovene version in 1906) Jansa revealed among others that the queen bee is fertilized by drones outside the hive, explained the causes and signs of swarming and described the beehive then used in Gorenjska. Jansa’s second book, Vollstandige Lehre von der Bienenzucht (“The Perfect Theory of Beekeeping”) was published by his successor Munzberg in 1775, and the first Slovene edition dates from 1792. The book describes the three kinds of bees in the hive, bee products, the arrangement of a bees’ nest, an apiary, a beekeeper’s tasks by season (E.G. moving the bees to the pasture). Jansa was the first to establish the causes of bee robbing. Of exceptional significance is the chapter which describes how empty combs are added to the frame in the beehive. The book is illustrated with seven annexes containing Jansa’s drawings.”

Thank you so much for a great presentation. I visited Slovenia in 2023 to learn more about the AZ hive. I use the AZ hive in Washington State. I hope to return to Slovenia next year for more bee information and to enjoy the beautiful country of Slovenia.

World Bee Day was established and celebrated on May 20 to commemorate the birth of Anton Jansa, considered "the most famous Carniolan beekeeper". Jansa changed the shape of hives and developed a stackable bee hive. He was a painter and he painted the fronts of all the hive in his apiary.
