I never comment, but this video was fascinating for me and I felt compelled to. Being raised in India, you feel your cultural and legal identities misalign. Growing up mixed race in Britain, I definitely used to feel my cultural and factual identities misalign. My cultural background is solely British and I consider myself a British person. If you watch videos such as Chinese Americans React to Panda Express, you can see a similar misalignment. When these young Chinese Americans tries Orange Chicken, they are concerned about some sense of authenticity; whereas when somebody from Shangai tries Orange Chicken, they are concerned about whether the flavours work well together. I bring this up to highlight the issues with factual identity. It doesn't capture much about who a person is. We are ultimately moulded by our environments. Despite being genetically similar, Emily from Shangai and Emily from Boston will have very different cultural relationships to Chinese culture e.g. Chinese food. I think we can get caught up on factual identity for two reasons. - One: society reacts to our factual identity first and cultural identity second. We may come to think of ourselves as a ___ person because we are first understand us as a ___ person, alongside any stereotypes that might entail. When I was 18, I had a period of feeling strongly Tamil (one of my genetic halves) despite not speaking the language, not knowing much if anything about the culture, and never having been to Sri Lanka. In hindsight, I can see this was a reaction to how I felt I was an outsider growing up. - Two: factual identity is immutable. Exactly as you said, you cannot change it. But I have ultimately come to peace with my identity (my only crisis is if someone asks where in the UK I'm from, do I say London or Oxford) by framing my identity as the totality of the factors that went in to making me. Ultimately, no initial questions will help you gauge what a stranger's upbringing and life were like. 'I grew up in London.' Do you mean Chelsea, Hackney, Harrow, Tower Hamlets...? 'My parents are both Russian.' Can you speak Russian? How much Russian have you heard from people outside of your family? 'I grew up in Japan.' Did you go to Japanese school or International school? When people make conclusions about your identity based on these questions with deliberately limited scope, they are trying with limited tools form a picture of who you are and what made you. But you know what made you, you were there. It is only really a problem of communication, not of who you are. If the reality of your identity is not easily expressible, then that is a problem of language, not of you. Funnily enough, I am actually British person rollerblading around a small Japanese town while waiting on an apartment application in Tokyo and hoping they won't dismiss me for only having a 1 year visa. I'm 23 so I think I might be a bit older than you, but those were my thoughts.

Thank you very much for such an insightful and intriguing comment, I really appreciate it. I don't have many people that I can talk about these things deeply and so it's really great to hear your perspective on this topic, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Recently I moved again to a new place where I met tons of new people and for the first time, I've become more conscious about how I describe my self. Whenever I'm asked where I am from, I started saying 'I was born in Japan and I grew up in India and Japan' instead of simply saying 'I am from Japan' This has made me feel so much more comfortable and have peace with my identity. As you said, I think it's really important to find the ways to express yourself in a way that feels right at that specific moment in time. Also, I think that identity is fluid and it keeps changing overtime so the way we express can keep evolving too, which I think is beautiful. Furthermore, from what I understand, unlike me who is 'fully Japanese' by blood, I think that many of my mixed friends have another layer to add to their factual identity, which is that their parents are from different origins. This makes their appearance 'different' leading them to being treated like a foreigner in the country they belong to. As globalisation continues, I hope that the way we perceive other people's identities transform overtime (I don't know know how to phrase it right now but I'll think about it until my next video). I guess we were doing the opposites, me a Japanese in a small UK town and you, a Brit in a small Japanese town! Hope you have a great time in Japan :)

great video. what wheel size would you recommend for skating on bitumen and asphault? What's the smallest wheel size you would use for this? 80, 90, 100?
@renssliceoflife2 ай бұрын
Personally I really like 125 because it feels smooth on any surfaces and also it's easy to gain speed. I'd say 90 or 100 if its four wheels but def 110 or 125 for three wheels.

Lovely vlog, and you've got a very interesting background! I think this kind of identity crisis is pretty common nowadays, with the globalization and so many people having been influenced by different cultures in different times of their lives. Though I think it's especially common for Asians, probably since those and Western cultures can be very different in comparison? I've also lived in a different country than I was born in for majority of my life, and it's not so simple to answer the "where are you from" question 😁
@renssliceoflife2 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment! Yeah I agree, my friends who are from multiple cultural backgrounds share similar thoughts. Also, I think identities can be quite fluid so I don't necessarily need to stick to one answer :)

@renssliceoflife7 ай бұрын
It depends on the shape of your feet as well. If there's a skate shop nearby, I'd suggest you go there to try some on before you buy them. If not, it's a bit of a gamble because you won't know if it would fit.
