I got a hold of this video 8 years later. I'm currently studying for the ACSM-EP-C, but really tying up some loose ends. I'm trying to save up some $$$ to take the exam. However, this is the best advice I've received. There may be newer editions to the texts and newer research since then, but I suppose the same is true now as it was then.

At 5:08 you say CAD (Coronary Artery Disease) then say Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), did you mean one over the other? TBH i believe both are important to know. Otherwise. I do appreciate the video.

Come back again and just passed the exam few days ago, basically it gotta be easy pass for every exercise science student, some questions I had no clue with but shouldn't be any problem rest of them were all common sense, it would be hard to get 90percent correct like 725+ but just easy to pass it and I got about 700

I found the small book with the spiral to be the most useful, but I took the exam long time ago. I believe this is the name of it: ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription. One thing that is helpful, is to use your knowledge to come to the right answers. Sometimes you can gather your knowledge/thoughts, and assess what you know, which helps you to determine the most reasonable response through informed decision making. For example, a physiological change of very large proportions is unlikely over a certain period of time, therefore answer a or b make no sense (does that make sense?). I was a kinesiology/exercise physiology major, and about 1.5 years after finishing my degree I went and took the exam (HFS) without studying/refreshing. It was a tough exam, but I was able to pass it by reasoning. There are some parts that you had to have memorized (such as the sites and directions in which you apply calipers, the planes of motion, simple things like that). But like Dylan says, know your basic principles well, understand them, and you can arrive at the answers.

I studied my ass off for about 2 weeks, took the exam and missed it by a couple points, there was a ton of psychological and behavior and leadership management questions. A good amount on HRR and max v02 and i had about 2 or 3 math equations. I think i was too afraid of the legal stuff so i spent more time on that and not enough on the assessment and risk stuff which bit me in the ass. The legal and management stuff is almost common sense but is also easy to remember and learn. So definitely focus on the risks and assessments because that is 60% of the exam basically. Taking it again on december 5th, pretty upset i missed it by 6 points but hopefully now i know what to focus on more this time.

I am going to be taking this exam soon but now that it's called the Exercise Physiologist certification there is a book for that. Do you think that I could just use the health fitness specialist book to study or do I need the new book?

Thanks for posting! provides good insight on studying for the exam. The following study guide is a great supplement to ACSM's Resources book that is highly recommended to help pass the exam. It provides the required information in an easy to read format which also includes 50 practice questions that give an idea of what the actual test will look like & quick reference pages for equations, conversions & acronyms. I'm so glad I found this video. I do have one question though. Do you recommend buying the resources from acsm? I still have all my textbooks from my classes and would like to use those since they most likely have all the information I need and I won't need to shell out more money.

I like your idea on making a channel for this is great, i haven't yet come across many videos going about reviewing for this particular exam, not sure why, great idea! I'm planning on taking the exam in a few weeks myself...Just wondering if you may possibility have any available practice tests or review information you may know of online that you may think may help?! If not do you know of any other resources that helped best? I have an exercise science degree, but went to physical therapy school for 2 years and decided to re-route back to exercise physiology, for someone like me who forgotten exactly what to spend the most time studying on, what do you suggest!? would appreciate any other recommendations, thanks bud!

Dylan, I have a question. So in the ACSM Certification Review book for the EP test the questions at the end of the scenarios require you to know the fitness categories very in-depth and also how to calculate the vo2max from equations. Is this the case for the test? or will that information be given.

Hi there! Just took and passed EP-C exam. The materials they mailed me we NOT helpful to help study for the exam. The certification rebuild helpful as far as themes and topics go. Lots of behavioral and cognitive theories which I was not expecting. You were correct know what you know well. Lots of risk assessment questions and not much math. I think 3-4/100. Not to toot my own horn, but if I didn't have a science background and do well in school I'm not sure I would have passed. I had to recall a lot of info from anatomy. Intercalated disks? Cmon!!! I have contacted acsm about their preparation to offer feedback because I am really unsatisfied with it. 😊

Hi, I'm thinking about taking this exam... but I'm not sure if it would be worth it to. Was it easier for you to find employment with your certification? I eventually want to become a clinical exercise physiologist and I'm thinking about taking the Certified Exercise Physiologist test first as a stepping stone towards the Clinical Exercise Physiologist goal. Also, because I think the clinical physiologist get paid slightly better.

Hi Gabriela. I'm wondering if you ever took that clinical exercise physiologist certification exam? I've been considering taking the exam as well because I want to expand my credibility. I'm also looking for better employment opportunities and hope the certification can help with that. Hope you see this response. Would love to talk some more about it.

I just finished reading ACSM's Resources for the HFS textbook. As an exercise science major, there was a lot of repeated information from what I have previously learned in class. But it was a great resource for those miscellaneous topics that you mentioned (legal issues, management, etc.) Overall, I found your video extremely helpful. I'm taking the HFS exam here in about a month. I think your advice of "know what you know really well" is probably what is going to help me study the most. Thanks for the video & hope to see more.
