I was in the audience for this performance, i was a music student in Vienna and went to the opera a lot, including plenty of Rosenkavaliers with other conductors. This was I believe the 2nd performance of a mini-run of 3 conducted by Kleiber -- labelled a 'Neu-Einstudierung' he would have had an orchestra rehearsal as well as piano rehearsals with the cast. I always went standing-room, and I recall this as a 'go queue up straight after breakfast' kind of day, but it was certainly worth the effort. The cast here was a pretty standard one for the Staatsoper at that time, so the singers were all well familiar with the production although Kleiber didn't rehearse it from scratch and this was the only time he conducted at the Vienna Opera for many years. This particular performance certainly lives in my memory as the best night I ever attended there, with the trademark Kleiber verve and musicality we know so well from his other recordings, as well as an outstanding precision of musical ensemble between stage and orchestra, which is witness to his immense technical command. This crystalline rhythmic and musical precision and unity unfortunately doesn't really show on the recording: even by the standards of other live Wiener Staatsoper audio recordings this one was never very good. I suspect the quality of audio recording is a big reason many people find the earlier video of Kleiber conducting Rosenkavalier, in Munich, to be a more satisfying recording.

Stunning. I've never heard Beethoven's Coriolan or Brahms 4 performed with such intensity. Such great music making in the Hercules Hall in Munich. (I once conducted there...... unimaginable to think I even stood on the same stage as the genius that was Kleiber.)

Great performance. Sad that the orchestra is undermiked or otherwise under-volumed compared to the applause, etc., at least on the Coriolan.
