The explosion is totally laughably unrealistic. If it were to happen at such a very high altitude, it would have virtually no blast effect on the sea level whatsoever. And the weapon´s power/yield seems also extremely unrealistic for a medium range tactical weapon.

This makes no sense. Hitting a nuclear warhead with an intercept won't detonate the warhead. It will detonate the primary charge which consists of high explosives, but there won't be a nuclear reaction.
@andrewbrown31565 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. You are correct assuming the warhead remains unarmed at the point of interception. In this scenario it is highly likely that the warhead was armed for detonation when the bus separated at sub orbital altitude. In that scenario, the intercept would detonate the warhead.
@Sol-os5pk5 ай бұрын
@@andrewbrown3156 The only situation in which a warhead creates a nuclear detonation is when the warhead was primed and detonated on its own. A secondary explosion would set off the primary, non-nuclear explosives, which would ruin the warhead and turn in into essentially a dirty bomb.

Fun fact! This is one of if not the most realistic scenes for ICBM reentry from orbit. The warheads, usually a few megatons, or over 1,000,000 tons of tnt in equivalency, detach from a “BUS” and rapidly start to descend, usually reaching speeds of Mach 23 or 25 at maximum, and detonating just before hitting the waterline or ground.

This movie scene is fairly inaccurate. US fired nuclear weapons in cruise missile configuration have no such counter technology where the enemy can determine if it is a nuclear yield. If they said it was a conventional missile then it would have made sense.
@iamarizonaball26426 ай бұрын
still, the ICBM scene is the most realistic in cinema history, it accurately depicts a w88 minuteman III nuclear warhead, at least thats what i think it is anyways, but it resembles it. the minuteman III would have 3 warheads not just one though, alongside decoys. and because the avg speed of them is mach 23 or 18,000 MPH, there would be little intercepting such a warhead. if you took out one, that may be a decoy, or an actual warhead, but even if the latter was the case, you still have 2 other warheads to deal with, and they're reentering the atmosphere, headed at mach 23 aka 18,000 MPH as i mentioned earlier, towards your nation. *THERE IS NO INTERCEPTING THAT.*
