In the old days, they used to call the way Jana played from the baseline being a "spoiler". Mixing up spins and pace to break down the opponent's rhythm

Watching this match again, you can see how Jana had matured as a match player. I Think she sensed she had a nervous opponent and just bided her time, playing a very steady match and waiting for her moment.

Loved Novotna. Her game and her nature. RIP Jana. Strange that when Hingis lost her cool she was labeled a "spolt brat" but when Venus looses it, it's cos she's young!!! There are loads of previous matches that swung on a "dodgy call" it's part of any game, no umpire, lines person etc are fool proof🤷

So sweet, so vulnerable, with such a powerful and entertaining game. My favorite. Her victory at Wimbledon is one of the great stories of sport. RIP, kiddo.

After the first three games, one could have been guilty of thinking that this could be a 6-0 6-0 match for Pierce. But Hingis really showed how she could adjust her game so well and started hitting harder and earlier, and going for the lines more. Mary's issue as a player was that she was single-gear and had a hard time adjusting if she wasn't in control of a point.
