How did the test go?
@abthepilot4 ай бұрын
As far as I could tell listening in on the radio, very well. No complaints about the locomotive and PTC seemed to be doing its job also. We’ll have to see if that continues once the western tour commences soon. But it sure is nice to see 4014 run without the diesel “helper” providing PTC.
@tommyhunter18174 ай бұрын
So, what is the end goal of these “tests”? And, why does it take so many more people to operate than it did in the 50’s with less technology?
@abthepilot4 ай бұрын
Hello Tommy, The tests are proving the operation of the new PTC system and all of the work that was put into 4014 over the past few years. The added people have a number of jobs that didn’t exist back in the 50’s. First, without the shop capacity and capability (besides their own in Cheyenne) they bring along parts and mechanics that can tackle light repair work in the field. Second, they did a lot of monitoring, research, and discovery about the best way to operate steam engines for the long haul. So they now have people to help filter and clean the water and monitor the oil. Doing this helps preserve the inner-workings of the locomotive so we can watch this beautiful pieces of history for a long time to come. Thanks for stopping by and the comments. Hope this answer helps you out. Have a great day! Aaron

I understand that UP realised that the budget for keeping the Big Boy running and using it as a massive advert for the Company was a lot cheaper than a Nationwide TV commercial! So everyone is a winner even me who travelled all the way from UK to ride behind it from Ogden a few years ago for the 150 celebration

Thank you Mike! Yeah, we had a pretty large system of thunderstorms move through last night and have another set due in tonight, thus the water. The Heartland Flyer runs in as a double-header due to not having a good wye near by in Oklahoma City and they don’t have to keep a hostler around to move the train while the crew is getting it’s rest for the return in the morning. Have a good evening and I’ll be watching you in the morning!

Great catch Aaron. I caught 22 Tuesday with 61 leading. I might pick an opportunity to go to catch the Eagle at Big Sandy. Saw the RPA seminar with Amtrak management two days ago and was infuriated to discover that traditional dining will be reinstated on the Silver Service early next year but still not the Texas Eagle and wouldn’t you know it, management, yet again, dodged discussing the continued absence of sightseer lounges on the Texas Eagle.

What a great entrance to the station. Through a building `WOW'.😉🤤 GREAT catch.
@abthepilot Жыл бұрын
Thank you Marne! Yeah, they had to do some reinforcement to that building and cutout a bit more room when they decided to start using these tracks for the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) that connects Fort Worth to Dallas. It was a few years after that Amtrak moved from the UP track over to TRE tracks. Thanks for watching!!!

@abthepilot Жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, Yeah, 62 needs some serious amounts of Bondo to get it back to looking good. The Eagle is dedicated to having the 50/60 series leading as they are modified for higher speeds in the CHI-STL corridor, so we see 62 a lot. Thanks for the comments and have a great day!!

Greetings Aaron. Picking up where I left off in the other video, I was saying where I hoped to retire to Lamy, New Mexico to railfan and film the Southwest Chief. But the challenge is the housing market. Lamy is a tiny town with few homes that seldom come up for sale, and when they do, they sell for ALOT of money. Last month a tiny 800 square foot bungalow (1 bed, 1 bath, no garage, no land) sold for $375,000. In my area here in Ohio, that same money would get you a 3000 square foot home on 10 acres. So my wife gives me heck when I talk of moving to Lamy because that part of New Mexico is so expensive. I search every day, hoping to find a bargain. How is the market where you are?
@abthepilot2 жыл бұрын
I hear ya about housing, because I can see why people want to live in that area. The market here has really inflated. Frisco has done a lot of good things to grow the community, but housing has gone up. Plus we pay very high property tax, so it’s made that bill get stupid big.
@paulmatulavich73212 жыл бұрын
Greetings Aaron. Thanks for your cordial reply to my earlier comment, and for sharing some of your personal backstory. I am always amazed at the diverse nature of railfans and their backgrounds. You and Mike Jensen are similar in that you both provide excellent content, rapid replies to messages, and seem to have great personalities. I congratulate you for your position as a corporate jet pilot - a most impressive accomplishment indeed! I recently retired from the Summit County Sheriff's Office here in Ohio, where I was director of public relations and media for many years. I absolutely loved going to work every day, and would probably still be working, except I wanted to chase trains full-time instead of part-time as I've done for 40+ years. (I will add to this message in another text.)
@paulmatulavich73212 жыл бұрын
Greetings Mister Frisco. I come to you in an unusual way. Had just discovered Mike Jensen's channel yesterday, and while watching one of his older videos saw this strange guy walk up to him while filming and it was you. So I was intrigued by your moniker 'Frisco Flyer' and decided to dive deeper. Thus I found your channel and subbed. As I told Mike, now that I retired, my hope is to leave Ohio and settle near the small town of Lamy, New Mexico. The Southwest Chief stops there twice a day, and I want to film the daily arrivals and departures once I create my own channel. You and Mike have inspired me.
@abthepilot2 жыл бұрын
Hello Paul, wow, that’s quite a story and goal! Yes, KZbin has given train-watching a whole new dimension and it’s been a lot of fun to watch. My handle The Frisco Flyer is a combination of ideas, first I live in Frisco, TX which had changed it’s name years ago with respect to the Frisco Railroad of which it’s former mainline goes right through town and add on the old Flyer monicker to name a local fast train. Second, my career is a corporate jet pilot. I don’t film that operation to due security and job rules. Yes, that was me on Mikes video. I had started “talking” to him through comments on his video and was fascinated (as I am still today) by his dedication to what he does. Thus I was very happy to step off the train to say a quick hi, and be able to bring him the mug from a local tourist railroad. That stop was during a life dream trip. My wife and I (and her parents for some) went FTW-CHI-SLC-EMY-SLO-SBA-LAX-CHI-SPI-FTW, and were able to take 24 days to do it with multiple stopovers. Truly an unbelievably wonderful time. I wish you the best of luck to move to the Lamy area! The Southwest Chief is such an iconic train with so much history, it would be very nice to have someone to document that stop. Plus the food in that area is one of my favorite regional flavor profile from anywhere in the world. The red and green chili’s and local dishes are truly amazing. Good luck and I’ll sub you too and watch for your videos. Aaron
