One "wrong". Is there a strictly grammatical reason to prefer "had I not" to "If I hadn't", or is it merely that this is the dominant phrasing in England and Australia? In the U.S., "had I not", would be thought of as pretentious, while "if I hadn't" is the common American usage and thought of as correct.

Don't think this one was covered but I come from Pennsylvania about 5 miles from the New Jersey border just north of Trenton. I grew up hearing the pronunciation as wooder. Our theatre director in high school brought to our (kids in plays) attention that there were a lot of local pronunciations that made no sense at all.

Historical linguists believe that Brits at one time sounded closer to American English, by the 19th century however many went out of their way to assume an accent that was how the aristocracy talked. Thus, American English pronunciation is more authentic, more historically accurate and better.

Actually, depending on what part of the USA you live in, the pronunciation may be a little different than the standard, because of the different regional accents.

I have to admit that a few years ago "water" was one of the words I consciously changed how I pronounced. Since I haven't lived where I grew up for decades I just want to pronounce some words more generically both for comprehension and not giving away where I'm originally from.
