Wow. I cannot fully express how grateful I am for this video. I feel totally prepared to tackle this with your in depth and approachable tutorial. I have been fantasizing about a digital dashboard for my family for FOREVER. Right now, we use a monthly and weekly calendar on the fridge, but we just don't keep up with it. I started look for options just this morning, but they were SO expensive and still not quite what I was looking for. Reddit lead me to raspberry pi and DAKboard and a quick KZbin search brought me here!

You do recall this is a voice operated device right? You can just tell it to add an event to your calendar. No need to type it in. Unless of course it misunderstands what you are saying. I’ve never heard of DakBoard prior to this video. Which made me look it up. They are very pricey. I do love the display, but nope Echo Show can do more.
@turbo.dad.restores14 күн бұрын
A good point about the voice event creation, I focused on the touchscreen operation of the calendar due to a large group of instagram commenters asking why I would build my personal DAKboard without a touchscreen. I did not mean to gloss over the fact that Alexa can write calendar events for you. Dakboard devices can be built DIY, which is what my last video covered. They only cost $100-300 to build depending on how you plan to use it, making it a VERY reasonable option for even the modestly DIY inclined.

The Echo Show carries most of its weight on the "wife approval factor," but the DAKBoard can do just about everything better, cheaper, and more securely.

What can the DakBoard do better and more cheaply than the Echo Show? Honest I really want to know.
@turbo.dad.restores14 күн бұрын
@@4daluvofnikki The freeware version of DAKboard is not far and above better than the Echo. That said, the DAKboard is far more customizable if you are willing to pay a subscription. Subscription allows you to make completely custom screen layouts, access the API to create your own processes, etc.
@turbo.dad.restores14 күн бұрын
@@4daluvofnikki Also worth noting that as far as I can tell, the Echo doesn't natively support calendar links from family apps like Cozi without using a secondary app like Mango. Only Google, Apple, and Microsoft calendars are natively supported. The DAKboard will accept any shared calendar link natively. Along those same lines, it seems the Echo wants to push you to use Amazon Photos to show your photos on the Echo screen, no Google Photos as an example. DAKboard allows you to pull from any popular photo sharing source that you prefer.
@4daluvofnikki14 күн бұрын
@@turbo.dad.restores I realize that for some a calendar is most important. For me not that important. My calendar is linked via my Android phone and iPad. So no matter which device I am using I can be reminded of something. I do not really use calendars on my Echo that much. I feel the Echo offers so much more than a calendar. However, the pictures I saw on DakBoard’s website of the calendars were pretty impressive. Being able to customize is a plus, but like I said calendars aren’t that high up for me. But if Amazon updated their calendar to be more customizable and look pretty like some I saw on DakBoard. The DakBoard wouldn’t stand a chance. Not to mention I would balk at having to pay a subscription.

@turbo.dad.restores26 күн бұрын
@@BojanStanikj It depends on your needs. If you only have 1 or 2 calendars to link, the free version can work great. If you need to link more than two calendar sources, or you really prefer a fully custom screen layout, one of the subscription options will probably be a good choice. The sample I show is using a free account. Personally I use a paid account as I have three calendars that I am linking, and I’m a sucker for customization.
