Glad you enjoyed it, it's a short sweet Sogo/Kagura arc. We get to see the two of them doing something a little different and some good depth on Sogo's character. It also sharpens the previous Sogo story, the Death Game, making it more clear how awkward this kid is and how much he tries to keep buries inside himself.

I'm glad we've progressed to the point in Gintama where watching it is more or less just laughing hysterically and going "what the fuck." Obviously there is a lot to like here, a heavy meta humor episode, lots of big meta flexes and really good jokes. And a frankly well situated message about the folly of character polls and how they aren't representative of the function of the characters.

Editing is fine. Just a few things First off, Jiraya is actually a historical figure, one that Naruto and Gintama And Ruroni Kenshin all use. In this case Gintama and Kenshin are closer in agreement, with both having him be a man whose body was burned. That isn't to say there is no Naruto references here, there are a few, but the names (even Danzo) are coming from historical figures. Otherwise welcome to the back half of Gintama. You are gonna have a lot of 10s here. This is definitely a peak, but much like Yoshiwara in Flames there are Many higher peaks to come. This is just a fantastic look into Tsukuyo. Plus the parallels between her journey and Gintoki's as two deeply injured souls. They really share a bond that started in the previous time we saw her and has blossomed into something incredible. Jiraya is also well situated as another tortured soul who much like with Housen is someone that could have been saved if he had made just a few different choices down the road. If he had chosen to trust others rather than continue down the path of isolation. Where Housen was bloodshed and war, Jiraya's path is assassination and anonymity. Both poison to the soul, both leading people down irredeemable roads, both things that Gintoki has dealt with. In fact this one cuts much closer to home for Gintoki. Gintoki has had his fair share of bloodshed, but he never reveled in it. He was good at it, and as something he was good at it became the first tool in his kit during the war. But by the time the series starts he has already set that tool aside. Not to never be used, but as a last resort, not a first resort. Isolation, however. Well he's better at this point, but that's because a bunch of aggressive people have forced themselves upon him. Even now he generally tries to push people away, fearing the pain of losing them, that same fear that consumed Jiraya. Seeing that reflection cuts deep, and it makes sense that he has in the recent episodes started to open up more to others, that this too is a lesson he has had to learn and deal with. (We saw this recently in the Tama Quest arc too) Anyway, glad you had a good time, sorry if this was a bit rambly, I've been really sick for a few days. Great video!

Ahhh. You know I should have figured he's just a historical figure hahaha. This second half is already kicking us off with a bang too, just wow! Yep, I ABSOLUTELY love the parallels between Tsukki and Gin's paths; wasn't even thinking of Hosen's similarity too though, well recognized :D No worries by the way; honestly couldn't even notice you were sick. Another really strong arc, mostly all comedy with some really deep ties. A lot of looking into Tama and who she is, as well as Gintoki. We are sort of entering the 'phase' in Gintama where Gintoki starts facing himself (Kintama sort of ends this phase) and we have a bunch of different reflections of Gintoki that he has to struggle in dealing with. (Granted to some extent that continues through to the finale, it gets more subtle after Kintama.) The other commenter put in a lot of good points already, I'm glad your friends had fun with it. Next time they ask what it's about just tell them "it doesn't matter." Because really what the show is about has two levels. The first is, whatever the current story is. This was about Tama and Gintoki. The second is the series as a whole, which is about diving deep into these characters over time. "What's it about" is the same answer from episode 1 to the final movie. "Whatever it wants to be about at the moment."
@KazuTwo_6 ай бұрын
Ohhhh!! That's awesome! I had no idea we'd be entering this sort of "self reflection" part of the story for Gin! Like I said on that other comment, we're now entering the arcs where everything is either completely forgotten to me or is a huge blur, so i'm basically going in blind at this point (save for a few key moments) Also, yea very true!! it's always just whatever it wants to be hahahahaha, that's a good way of putting it. I'm never good at thinkin gof what to say on the spot lol

I really like this arc, specially the way it explores Gintoki character in a unique way, not by having him explain something or by having a flashback, but by having a reflection of how someone that cares about him SEES him. Everything inside Tama is based on her memories and thoughts, so obviously her main anti-virus, the King, is based on the man who has protected her the most, Gintoki, and it's very interesting how even though he hides his feelings and insecurities the people that care about him like Tama seem to have a good read on him since the King seems to have the same behaviors as him, so by analyzing how the king acts, how he thinks and what does Tama think of him we can get more information about Gintoki. My favorite bit related to this is this dialogue when Tama starts disappearing in 169 (nice): "Tama: Isn't he just like you? He has difficulty expressing himself... He's antagonistic... He's all based on you. Gintoki: You see me as such a shameless person? Tama: As I observed you and collected data, he evolved into someone more human than I was. That is why I could not stand by and watch him die alone. You should be able to understand... Why he keeps telling you to leave so he can go alone... Why he acts so hostile..." The parts that always pop up in my mind when rewatching is the fact that a robot made something more human than themselves by basing the model on Gintoki, and the way the King doesn't value his life or doesn't see it as real compared to the lives of his new friends so only he has the "right" to put himself in danger. Another very interesting bit is the conversation he has with Gintoki at the end: "Gintoki: There you have it. Your life is no longer yours to throw away. You're more than someone who protects Tama. All the protecting you've done has led to people who will protect you in return. All squirmy-like... Just like a white blood cell. King: I just had to be the copy of such a difficult man. Even now, I can't offer any words of gratitude or tears... What would you do in this situation? Gintoki: Smile." Also since you have already seen Shogun Assasination and Silver Soul arcs before this rewatch: The fate of the King's father (being consumed by the virus and the virus using his body against the King) and the "Smile" Gintoki mentioned in the dialogue above (Flashback in SA) both hit a little different, I wonder if Sorachi did it on purpose (tho if you cant recall thats prob better, I wouldnt try to refresh the memory before rewatching the arcs again to have a better experience).
@KazuTwo_6 ай бұрын
YES YES AND MORE YES! It's a fantastic introspective look into how people see Gintoki! (especially Tama of course) Also, I do see what you mean; it's really interesting to see that Tama almost accidentally created something more human than herself. Something we obviously see her struggling with in day to day life. I remember that one episode where Otose gave her some time off and she had no idea what to do with herself lol. Also I'm not gonna lie I surprisingly forget what you're talking about with the smile; a lot of those later arcs are a blur to me. Hell, I almost completely forgot what this one entailed lol. I guess It has been like 5 years now since I've seen it. Appreciate the comment!

Why wouldn't they switch? Money. This is the last 50 episode season (150-200) and their budget is already drained each season, so switching to HD is just beyond them. When this season ends they go off the air for a few years and when they come back (201 or 202) it's with 13 episode seasons and HD. In the manga for this arc, it Starts with three pages that is the same as Gin's sum up and at the bottom of the third page is the end credit, supposedly marking the end of the chapter. The anime takes this joke and Runs. Don't... don't dig too deep into the manga. The manga's main problem is that there is no good translation. The official translation ends on volume 23 and the fan translations don't get decent again until around chapter 400ish. A lot of the stories in between are butchered, making it a more difficult read than necessary. I have to think that pianist is either a typo or translation error. But I can't find anything online. I recall looking into it before and finding something about it being a "competition involving many different parts" but I can't remember the spelling I used (I had started trying similar words on google until I found that one.) Ginpachi Sensei is set for 2025 No, Taka-tin never returns, but I think I prefer it that way. He's a precious gem It's an impressive arc. After two episodes of set up it fully digs into the questions it laid down. Answering Gin's complaints from the start, digging into Toshi and Shinpachi as characters and letting both grow. All while also just Drenching the remaining four episodes in octane comedy so you don't even notice the themes playing out until the very end of the arc when it lands the gut punch. One of the stronger Gintama arcs, its underrated because Otsu is herself one of the most controversial characters. A lot of fans either love or hate her with very few in the middle, which also ends up taking a lot of steam out of the popularity for this arc.

Yeah, this is... my least favorite Shogun episode. Like, it's still pretty damn funny, there's a lot of good jokes here. But the second half's reliance on being Really Fucking Gross is... ugh. So like, I get where its coming from, alright? The first Shogun episode was based on a classic commentary "the emperor has no clothes" in which the shogun is eventually stripped down and runs naked through the town. It's a political commentary. This is Also a classic political commentary, the emperor goes to a public facility to see how the poors are being handled, and because the emperor is hated, everything is terrible. Most versions of this even include some form of poop being put on or in the food of the emperor. Unfortunately I also don't like that one, for the same reasons. I Get it. It is a political statement on how much the lower class loathes its leadership. I just... really wish I didn't have to see it be so gross. Blech. Thank goodness the next Shogun ep is the pool. Much better

Okay, so this is an arc folks have trouble with. I've been through it a few times and it's actually Impressively smart and intensely revealing for Sogo. First off this arc IS canon, even in the manga Hijikata survives because a fall like that just can't kill Hijikata, he's dealt with way worse. Secondly put this into the context of the series around it. The most recent big Shinsengumi stories have been Mitsuba and Shinsengumi Crisis. In both Hijikata has re-affirmed his connection to Kondo and Sogo. Now, look at who Sogo is, he is far too prideful to just come out and say kind things to Hijikata, and he now feels he has things to say. So he's constructed an environment *In Which He is Comfortable Saying* the things he wants to say. Sogo is a sadistic troll, and Needing to get this shit off his chest is a problem for him. He can't just be honest, especially not with Hijikata. The proof? One of the last lines where he is talking to his accomplice "Maybe next time I can play with a certain silver haired man." He also has Several debts to settle with Gintoki by this point, which means this is just sort of his way of talking about his feelings. Manufacturing a crisis, testing, and then using the parting words to be honest before a false self sacrifice. It's why the moment he was separated from Hijikata he unhooked the collar and went on his own way, he got what he was after the moment he gave his parting speech. If you walk away not liking that part of his character, that's fine, he's a sadistic little troll and always will be, but it is very in line with who he is to have trouble with opening up about his feelings. I think the big twist at the end adds a bunch of hard feelings and asks the viewer to really think about what they just saw. Its a re-contextualization in miniature, you need to think about everything that happened from the perspective of "Sogo set all this up."
@kazutrash Жыл бұрын
Oh yea absolutely, you’re not wrong! I love your analysis, when thinking about it as Sougo it really does put a whole new perspective into this arc. What I’m annoyed about though is that it looks like he fell to his death lol-to the point that I thought this wasn’t canon. If it actually is like you say, then I’m super happy! And maybe my theory is actually correct-because that fall looked deadly lol. Also yea, I know, I fell into that trope of being mad that anime characters survive certain things and ignored the fact that Gintama characters are superhuman again, and for the sake of it I’ll say that sogo was indeed taking those characteristics into account here
@davidwegescheide3796 Жыл бұрын
I mean, it's also very Sogo. When presented with the opportunity he would Absolutely throw Hijikata into a dark pit and expect Hijikata to be hurt, but survive. That is just... Sogo tbh @@kazutrash
