Certain ethnic communities in America particularly in bigger, working class cities, it was still common to identify people based on their ancestors depending on what nationality your father was (the last name you bear) regardless of whether you were 100%. The big contention was when Irish and Italians would marry because they are such historically strong cultures in the US and Canada, that people would have to decide whether you were more Irish or Italian. Yes this does seem dumb but it was a for communities to unite and to identify characteristics amongst different people and groups.

My mom's side focused on the notion that they were a big Iris Catholic family because they had 8 kids even though her mother (my grandma) was 100% Slovak. Even my grandmother leaned into the Irish identity more because there was a larger Irish American community to identify with.
