I'm with you on the 'traditional' equipment and time put into eco-dyeing. Doesn't seem very 'eco' to me to boil rusty bits and then let the boiled bits sit for three weeks. I try to stay AWAY from rust, not embed it in my paper! Great result using the iron capsules!

Truly gorgeous results! Thank you so much for sharing! I especially love your use of iron tablets - great idea - and your efforts to only use things that are safe for human consumption so that you don’t need another set of utensils should be applauded. I have a few other comments. In regard to using iron of any description in things you also cook with, you still need to be careful! It is possible to overdose on (and people can die from) iron ingestion. Yes, we definitely do need some in our diet, but there is a limit. So you need to be mindful of how much iron you are putting into the pot and how often you are doing it. The second thing is that iron particles tend to stick around in vessels in which it is put for the purposes of dyeing - that is the reason that some dyers will have one vessel that they keep separate from others, in which they do any iron mordanting, dipping etc. . It only takes a tiny amount of iron to darken/sadden/blacken/grey another colour. In fact, I think that the reason why one of your bundles is darker is probably more related to the fact that the bundle was given a second soaking in your iron bath prior to steaming, rather than the length of time it was steamed … but I could be incorrect. Anyway, I just thought I would add those cautionary comments …

Is it possibly to use fixative at the end to make the colours last longer if Exposed for sunlight?

3 years later and I love these. Iv made a few, but not like this. Id rather make varied ones. These remind me of my childhood. Valentines always rolled out cool graphics and cards in the 80s. I tried looking for the digitals you used but they are not available it seems. If you have a new link it would be great. I love these victorian paperclips. ❤ the closeups are great.

Hi Denise I just stumbled across your channel and boy did I learn a lot about Travelers Notebooks. I didn't realize there were so many sizes. Is there a way to get a copy of the sheet that you had all the sizes on? I love how you showed us the many ways to make a protective covering and some of the ways you made your closures. TFS ❤ and I'm subscribing to your channel as well.😊

It has been 2 years since you posted this, so I'm late to the party. I have tried numerous methods of eco-dyeing and your method has given me the best results yet. Our local store only had ferrous sulfate iron so I went with what was available. I crushed the pill and dissolved it in my water. I got my best results by soaking my watercolor paper for 20 to 25 minutes in the solution. I steamed for 26 minutes. Once I could touch my bundle, I pressed with my hands all around the bundle and flipped it and did the same on the other side and then just left it alone for 30 minutes or so. I definitely did a huge happy dance when I cut my bundle open. I wish I could attach photos so I could share what you helped me achieve. Thank you!

Hi Denise. Love these ideas, and I do have a ton of page protectors. I use them to keep all my Sunday School stuff together for kids class. I like the ones with the pockets on the inside. Could keep receipts and stuff we gather on our trip. We are going on a long road trip vacation and one or two of these would be more fun than the plain old envelope that the hubby usually uses and I could write notes in it too. Like, “I’m bored, ” or “Are we there yet?” or “I have to pee.” Someone has to remind us of our younger years. LOL. Love you and may God bless you today.
