I’m so glad I got introduced to Acapella in my teenage years. These songs are what I defined as Gospel music. I love that I can still listen to this at 35, not needing all the extra instruments, and experience the presence of God just the same.

Okay, hearing this brought back a very clear memory. When I was somewhere between 5 and 8 when I was listening to this almost daily, I had a very unique interpretation of the lyrics. At the part started at 2:23 I didn't have CC to know the lyrics, and I thought he said something about a singer who died, not "lifting up my savior who died". Then he says something about being satisfied, and I remember telling my dad and older sibling what my interpretation of the song was. I thought it was about them saying they were "well on my way" to the grave, and that because they found Jesus they could live their lives completely satisfied like their faith in Jesus had helped them find a state of enlightenment like they talk about in Buddhism, or something like that. Like they were singing joyfully a song about Jesus's victory over death. Now remember I was like 5 to 8 at the time, and the memory this unlocked was when I told my dad and older sibling about this. My older sibling was just like "it's not about that!" but my dad was actually kind of creeped out that I came to such a morbid conclusion at such a young age, especially since that's not the song's meaning at all. The crazy part is that I have a more vague memory of finding out later that one of the singers (I think the super deep voiced base singer) had passed away just a couple of years after this song's recording, and now I'm looking back on my younger self with the same kind of expression you get when that creepy kid tells you something out of left field and creepy but you get a feeling it's somehow correct, like some kind of message from God spoken through the mouth of a babe. Am I wrong about one of the band members passing away later? It's a much less clear memory than the other one I described, so the death of one of the band members could be a false memory from being over 2 decades ago. Like a memory of a dream or something. Anyway, We're all "well on our way" to the grave if we're old fans of this band, but he's already had victory over death. Live your life "completely satisfied" and "sing his praises" because the grave is not the end! That's what 5 year old me would have told you. 😆

To clarify, I didn't know about Buddhism or "enlightenment" at the time, but I sort of felt through the song the concept that enlightenment describes. It's kind of strange that a kid that young could intuit the concept from a song, but then again it is a very good song. And since it was my favorite at the time I played it a lot and tried to fully understand the lyrics. My mishearing that one line "savior who died" as "singer who died" was the source of my misunderstanding, but the conclusion isn't bad either!

This was my first favorite song ever. I was 5 at the time when I first heard it. Just had to hunt it down for 2+ hours because I haven't heard it since I was like 8 and I couldn't remember the name or much of it at all. So glad I found it.
