Jim needed to die. All the arguments made for and against his death were good, but there's one more thing to remember, Jim was NEVER going to leave Edward alone. If Jim was arrested, he would have waited until he was released from prison or juvie or whatever and then he still would have gone up there to kill Edward. The moment Kim broke up with him was the moment Jim decided he was going to do whatever it took to make sure Edward died and if Edward didn't kill him Jim would've kept trying. Moreover, Jim hitting Kim was a clear indication that he might've killed Kim too at that point. No matter what argument anyone can make, Jim had to die.

@KennyStepsIntoMovies Thank you! One more thing though and it's regarding the manner in which Jim died. Edward had to be the one to kill him and I have 4 reasons. The first 2 have been said many times (the town somewhat corrupting Edward to do something like that, and the fact that it was self defense since Jim was trying to kill him)but here's 2 other reasons. 1, it shows that what Jim said earlier in jest that Edward would do anything for Kim was right on the money. Remember, Jim hit Kim during the final battle and before that Edward wasn't fighting back. But the moment Jim struck Kim he signed his own death warrant. And 2, it needed to be a death to show Jim himself that he had lost. He had done nothing but be awful to Edward the entire movie and likely thought Edward would do nothing to him in retaliation. When Edward stabbed him though, look at Jim's face. It's a look that says "Oh crap, maybe I shouldn't have been tormenting the guy with blades for fingers". Not that the knowledge was going to save him at that moment but it was the final humiliation for this despicable jerk that the victim defeats the bully.

There are sooo many reasons but one that I don't believe was mentioned in the vid is streaming compression.. and this is why I still collect vinyls and CD's as well. Streaming movies in "HD" and even "4K" aren't visually and audibly comparable to their physical counterparts, blu-ray and 4K blu-ray. The same goes for streaming music versus playing music on a record player or CD player.

As someone who didn’t see this until they were an adult. I get what people are saying. Jim is not redeemable by what we see. He’s controlling, he’s a narcissist, he frames Edward, and of course helps lead to him being banished. I agree in the context of the scene Edward is justified in killing Jim. However if Jim was arrested for what he did I think that would’ve been more warranted punishment. Had Jim done something more severe like kill Kevin with his car and had edward blamed for it than yes.

My issue isn’t really that Klaatu is more of a flawed character. My issue is much more that the movie itself seems to think he and his intentions are without flaw. Lets not forget that he landed without warning in a major city, shut off all power, with the intention of delivering a very threatening message from a planet that earth had done nothing against and had no idea even existed. Not to mention, as you pointed out, his society is far far from being right to act so high and mighty. All of this kinda dampens the message of the movie a lot in my eyes.

I very much prefer the benevolent alien for the following reasons: 1) imagining a transcendent life form is extremely difficult given the ratio of benevolent aliens to those that want to kill us....the default imagination of our species; 2) in the case of the original Day The Earth Stood Still, the imagined galactic community drew a line in the sand, effectively stating that "join us in peace or face utter destruction if you wish to spread your violence into the universe; 3) this science fiction masterpiece was before Star Trek; 4) the film had started the development of a transcendent ideology....in the vein of a galactic Constitution that bound together multiple alien civilizations. A great shinning light to set our ethical guidelines as our species moves forward in time.

Then i kept collecting even when netflix came out and many at work mocked my wanting for physical media, they all told me that netflix is all one will ever need. I knew this wouldn't be cause what company wouldn't just do it themselves after it became the normal. Now those people bug me for physical media to borrow cause their 4 or 5 streaming services don't have it anymore. Got around 3000 in total

I have never had streaming due to going over a relatives house when the streaming craze first started. They were excited to let me play around with it. So I did for two hours. That's how long I scrolled and input possible movies to watch and by the time I found something I didn't want to watch it and just wanted to go to sleep. Weird but I think it is because I had no intent behind what to watch. When I think about a movie I say "what genre am I in the mood for?" Once I answer that question I can picture or go look at the DVDs that match said genre in my collection. Making a decision from there is simple. The endless scrolling was exhausting and unenjoyable for me.

I think DVD has been obsolete for over a decade at this point. Buying a DVD in 2024 would be like buying a VHS in 2018. Blu ray and 4K should be the only thing people are getting since everyone has at least a 1080p TV. It drove me nuts when walmart was still selling physical movies and 95% of them were still DVD. You don't have to rush to upgrade DVDs that you already have but buying new DVDs in 2024 is just dumb in my opinion. They can pry my 4K and blu rays from my cold, dead hands though. They're as good as it's going to get in terms of visuals.

I also have fond memories of going to my local Video rental store, it was a family event, as a kid you would enjoy a family movie night and that. I mean people still can have a family movie night obviously but back then it would feel like an event as you would have to go to the Rental store and pick what you wanted to rent. It’s simple things like that, that you kind of miss really. But I digress. Also the best way to know who’s a Millennial and Gen Z, is to ask Do you remember CD shops?, if they say yes they are a Millennial, if they say no they are Gen Z. I’m a Millennial as I do remember CD shops.

I love physical media, I just love that I can pick something off my shelf any time I like, and I love cool artwork on them. I don’t collect DVD’s anymore because tbh they were always ugly, with just ugly studio artwork. So I mainly collect Blu Ray’s/4K’s as they come in much nicer artwork and packaging, especially the Boutique ones. I like the fact I own them and can watch anytime, and I love the artwork as it’s nice to look at. Streaming can do one, because physical media will always be so much better.
