Paul did not undermine the legitimacy of slavery, because he sent Onesimus back to his slave-master, Philemon, with a personal request that Philemon not punish Onesimus too harshly for having escaped. Paul did not ask Philemon to free Onesimus, nor did he ask Philemon not to punish him for escaping. He simply stated that Onesimus had been useful to him and asked Philemon to take that into account before meting out punishment. Nothing in all this undermined the legitimacy of slavery.

I agree that Paul did nothing overt to undermine the practice of slavery in the Greco-Roman world. I do believe that there are hints in his writings that allow for the possibility that he did believe that it was appropriate for Christians to own other people, let alone other Christians. Evidence from the early church and Paul's own writings suggest that Philemon honored Paul's request and released Onesimus to Paul for service. Within the Christian context, at least, and taking into account Paul's own assertion that in Christ there is neither slave nor free, slavery was not appropriate, but this was a question that would not be taken up in Paul's lifetime.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV) - “For by GRACE are ye saved through faith; and that NOT of YOURSELVES: it is the gift of God; NOT of WORKS, lest any man should boast.” (GRACE means UNDESERVED GIFT. NO human effort or works can be involved in receiving or keeping salvation. We must trust ONLY on the payment for all sins that Lord Jesus (God the Son) made at the cross.) Romans 11:6 (KJV), “And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace....” (Trusting on ANY human effort or works means that person is not under grace, but is attempting to qualify for salvation by the law/commandment keeping/human effort, and is therefore NOT saved). The UNDESERVED GIFT of Salvation is received by ANY person that Trusts in their Heart ONLY on Jesus’ (God the Son who came as God in flesh) DEATH (includes the shedding of Lord Jesus’ blood), BURIAL, and RESURRECTION for salvation, with NO faith for salvation on any type of human effort, works, or claimed positive human qualities. BELIEVING the Gospel, (1 Cor. 15:1-4) with NO Faith on ANY Human Effort, is the ONLY way to Receive Salvation. Notice what is NOT included (works / human effort). Romans 4:5 (KJV), “But to him that worketh NOT, but BELIEVETH on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” (‘righteousness’ means God makes the believer sinless in God’s eyes concerning standing and salvation) Acts 16:30-31(KJV) - “The Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, BELIEVE on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” Trusting on any works or claimed human goodness for eternal salvation means NO salvation. Galatians 5:4 (KJV), “Christ is become of NO EFFECT unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law (works); ye are fallen (separated) from grace (not saved). Our BEST righteous acts, for the purpose or earning or qualifying for salvation, are as FILTHY RAGS: Isaiah 64:6 (KJV), “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” Verses proving the doctrine of the pre-tribulation rapture for ALL born-again believers: All Born-Again believers will leave in the rapture, so the key is to insure that you are Actually Born-Again. FAITH, plus NOTHING, ONLY on Lord Jesus' (God the Son, God in flesh) death, burial, and resurrection means GOD makes the believers Permanently Born-Again. Trusting on ANY other Works/Human Effort means NO SALVATION; and all that are Not Born-again will be left: 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 (KJV), “Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall ALL be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed..” (ALL means ALL born-again believers (Christians). Thessalonians 4:16-18 (KJV), “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” (How could we be comforted knowing we would go into the tribulation? We are comforted because born-again believers are removed BEFORE the tribulation) Revelation 3:10 (KJV), “Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.” We have God's promise that because we have kept HIS WORD (BELIEVED) the Gospel of salvation, He will keep born-again Christians "from the hour of temptation" (i.e., the Tribulation Period). This seven-year period of tribulation is referred to in the Old Testament as The Time of Jacob's Trouble in Jeremiah 30:7-11 NOT the Church/Body of Christ/Christians’ trouble. Jeremiah 30:7 (KJV), “Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it. It is even the time of JACOB’S trouble; But he shall be saved out of it.” The primary reason for the tribulation is to bring the remnant of Jewish people to saving faith by believing ONLY on Lord Jesus (God the Son). Thessalonians 5:9 (KJV), “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.” (The tribulation is God’s wrath; Christians do not go under God’s wrath, because ALL sins for the born-again Christians have been removed when a person is made born-again by God by trusting ONLY on the death (includes the shedding of Lord Jesus’ blood), burial, and resurrection of God the Son ( Lord Jesus). Lord Jesus paid for all sins at the cross, but most people do not trust ONLY on that payment for all sins by Lord Jesus, and they are therefore NOT born-again; they are under the law; that means they will be in the tribulation. Thessalonians 1:10 (KJV), “And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which DELIVERED US FROM THE WRATH TO COME.” When Jesus Return, he returns WITH his Saints (born-again Christians), and he can't do that if they are still here on earth.

I am not a New Testament Christian. The Bible says I can’t be, nor can you. It is said, “the old testament was for Israel, but the new testament is for the church.” While it is true that the old testament was made with Israel, it would be wrong to say the new testament was made with the church. The scripture cannot be clearer that the new testament was merely a replacement for the old made with the “house of Israel and with the house of Judah”. “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days,…” - Hebrews 8:10 (quoting Jeremiah 31:33). New Testament is not the Body of Christ! It is said, “If you are not in the new testament, how can you call yourself a Christian?” The answer is realizing that Christ did more than mediate for the new testament made with Israel, he also created a new creature called the church, the Body of Christ (1 Cor 12:27). While both of Israel’s testaments speak prophetically of Christ, neither one speaks of the mystery of Christ to create this new creature where there is neither Jew nor Gentile. The mystery of Christ was kept secret since the world began, which means it was not contained in the covenants of promise made with Israel (Eph 3:4-5). The new testament does not explain the creation of the mystery church, but it does guarantee that Israel will not cease to be a nation, which has little relevance to the hope of the church today. “If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.” - Jeremiah 31:36 The New Testament is a Law Covenant! It is said, “The new testament is faith in Jesus Christ.” Yes, the new testament requires faith in the Messiah to be a partaker, but that is not all that it requires. Remember, faith without works is dead for the new testament participant, because the laws of God are written in their heart and mind causing them to do them (Eze 36:27). “…I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts:…” - Heb 8:10 Rather than a lack of works testifying to dead faith, a lack of works today can testify to a strong faith in the power of Christ’s finished work for salvation. New Testament and the Kingdom It is said, “The new testament is the kingdom of God on earth.” While this may be true, according to the promises of the new testament we are not living in that kingdom today. “And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them,…” - Jer 31:34 Instead of not needing teachers, teachers of the Bible abound in trying to exposit the truths of scripture. Instead of all Israel knowing the Lord, the majority of Israel is still in unbelief. All of Israel will not be saved and the new testament fulfilled until the kingdom is brought by the Lord from heaven. “And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.” - Rom 11:26-27 No New Testament Christians Today! The new testament was not made with Gentiles, it does not describe Christ’s work for the church, it is a law covenant, and it is not being fulfilled today. No believer today can be a new testament Christian if the Bible means what it says to whom it says it. Meanwhile, the believer today should be more than excited to be a member of the body of Christ, saved by grace without works, not under the law, teaching the gospel of the grace of God to a religious world whose only hope is wrongly thinking they have a special covenant with God.

With all due respect, I think that you are confusing the New Testament with the New Covenant in Christ. The latter is described in the former, but the focus is on Jesus, not on a book, no matter how holy. The quote from Jer. 31 referenced in Heb. 8 speaks to the portions of the law that spell out the atonement rituals. Jesus's sacrificial death on the cross replaced the need for the Levitical priesthood and its rituals. The New Covenant in Christ is between God and humanity, mediated by Christ (Heb. 8). Works are not required for salvation but in my opinion, they are the appropriate response to the assurance of salvation. The primary work in which we are to be engaged is spreading the Gospel. Your assertion that the NT does not describe Christ's work for the church is incorrect. His work for and on behalf of the church forms an integral part of Paul's letters. It would be helpful for our discussion if you would define your terms for me so that we can establish a common ground.
