Interesting take on Gandalf’s reaction to the Witch-King! Do you think his shock was more about underestimating the Witch-King’s power, or was it tied to some deeper, almost prophetic realization about the threat he posed? Given Gandalf’s wisdom and foresight, could his reaction hint at something beyond just immediate danger?

I like how the prophecy that no man could kill him filled the Witch King with arrogance, even though there were so many individuals who could kill him if we stick to what "man" means in Middle Earth. Not only could he be killed by a human woman, he could be killed by ANY elf, ANY dwarf, or ANY Maiar. I would have loved for Robot Chicken to do a skit where the supremely confident Witch King is bragging in front of a servant who does the "um, actually" thing and carefully points out all of the possibilities while the Witch King's confidence gradually wilts to nothing.

What I think is so sad is Minas Ithil. Obviously, Morgoth was the most powerful. But he just destroyed cities. He didn't corrupt them and turn them into something evil, like the witch king did with Minas Morgal. On saying that however, he did turn captured elves into orcs, which was worse 😢. Reckon he missed a trick with Gondolin and Nothrogond though. I find people do tend to underestimate the witch king because he was once human. But it's like Sauron upgraded him to make him steeped in sorcery and black magic. And he did wipe out Anor and seriously weaken Gondor. I'm not sure who would've won in a face-to-face duel. But hopefully Gandalf.

This is just a theory. But in Christianity, there's always been arguments about predestination - God's plans everything out - and free choice. Tolkien was Roman Catholic. So firstly, Eru Iluvatar sets out his grand plan for how Arda is going to be. Nothing is left to chance. But he also wants to give his children freedom of thought. But how can he do that if everything is already mapped out for them? Their destinies are set in stone. Solution? Melkor. He adds chaos to Iluvatar's plan. Without the disruption Melkor causes, there'd be no spontaneaty. If thanks to melkor, people's lives divert away from Iluvatar's plan, then they themselves are free to choose how to respond, not Iluvatar. Just a thought.

I didn't realise Morgoth gave Sauron Mordor. And I don't know how Morgoth could've given Sauron the title lord of the rings, when by the time Sauron and Celebrimbor made them, Morgoth was long gone. I do find the overall question of what Morgoth would've thought of the one ring interesting though. I personally think Morgoth would've simply told Sauron to get on with it and use the one ring in any way he saw fit. As long as Sauron still obeyed Morgoth, what would be the problem? Alternatively, what if Sauron gave Morgoth a ring of power in order to betray him? I think Sauron would fail. Even in his weakened state, Morgoth would likely overpower Sauron like he did with Fingolfin. However, Luthian was able to sing Morgoth to sleep and she was only half maia. Maybe there was a chance Sauron could've succeeded and launched a coup against Morgoth, replacing him as dark lord of Angbad. It's fun to speculate anyway.

Saurons ring story is rather drab to begin with. It would make more logical sense that destroying the ring in Mount Dooms lava only destroys the ring but RELEASES Saurons attached power rather than destroying it with the ring, returning once more to Sauron. How does a melting ring and lava destroy magic too ffs 💍🤣

Have you noticed how awful yet somehow strangely apposite Tolkien's punishments are? Oath breakers as humans destined to be reunited with the one, forced to wait almost an entire age without Eru's special gift to man until released by the heir of the one they broke faith with. The same denial of return of fea to the one, for the dark compacts made by the ring wraiths. Ar Pharazon & his king's guard, desirous of immortality, granted just that but buried under a gigantic landslide. Sentenced to an eternity in the holy land they were barred from entering, again without the sweet release promised to all men not even the respite of the halls of Mandos. The two Maiar who through their own egotistical desires for control over Arda, lost all ability to take form. After the final destruction of their Hroa great dark clouds arise from their remains. Only when looking away west to be met with strong ,cold winds blowing their essences away with a sigh. Forced to watch for an eternity unable to take solid form and inflict their evil plans on the destinies of the free peoples. The greatest of the Valar according to Eru, bound with a great chain and cast into the void an eternal being denied his own perceived domination. Maimed by Fingolfin and burned by his unclean touch on the silmarils. Mending those hurts prevented, what would an eternal need with healing powers for himself. Awaiting through all the ages for the eventual Dagor Dagorath with only his ultimate defeat to look forward to. Each moment in the void an eternity as only the spinning and wheeling of stars to mark the passage of time. Arda marred from the beginning during the Ainulindale but left to heal with the gentle help of the Ainur without domination or chaos, torture for unrestrained egos in deed.

Tolkien’s punishments are poetic in their irony-each one perfectly tailored to the character’s flaws and desires. Oathbreakers, Nazgûl, and Ar-Pharazôn all face fates that mirror their choices, turning their ambitions into eternal burdens. Even Morgoth, once the mightiest, is left powerless in the Void, his wounds unhealed and his dominion forever denied. It’s as if Middle-earth itself enforces balance, ensuring that unchecked ego and betrayal lead not just to downfall, but to a fate worse than death-an existence without purpose.

But it says quite clearly in the return of the king Sauron becomes a harmless shadow, hiding in some lonely spot, eating itself up with malice, but unable to make any impact whatsoever on middle earth ever again - the main reason being most of him fell into the fires of Mt Doom, along with the ring. In short, his ability to do anything ended along with the ring. Cool video though! I love 'what if' videos 😊

What I love about this tale is how the very power placed upon Saurons ring to prevent it's destruction became the very reason it got destroyed. This incredibly powerful mind controlling allure for the ring which made it impossible for anyone holding it to throw it into the lava, only served for those who craved for it to fight so ferociously and with reckless abandonment for their own wellbeing that Smeagol, once in possession of it, fell off resulting in the rings destruction. In the movie, even when Smeagol fell to his death, his last actions were trying to prevent the rings destruction which I felt was very clever from Peter Jackson. Smeagol falls to certain death, yet his obsession for the ring is unbroken as he cradles it like a mother would her baby, completely uncaring of the fall and imminent death he's fully aware of. Then, in his last act, and although he loves the ring more than anything else, he raises it from the lava to prevent it's destruction for as long as he can while he himself is engulfed in the agonising heat and death of the lava. He tries to save the ring until there's literally nothing left of him. I felt that was very well done to showcase the power of control this ring actually has and how there was absolutely no need to protect the entrance etc. There simply was no need to would be my guess and Sauron, even Gandal knew that. It's simply impossible for anyone or any creature or wraith to willingly throw the ring to its destruction. In the end, the ring wasn't destroyed because Isildur or Bobo or Frodo or Smeagol willingly threw it in. They couldn't, it's impossible. No, the ring was destroyed because it fell in by those willing to die protecting it. I believe this may also explain why Elrond didn't try and prevent Isildur from leaving with the ring too. For he knew perfectly well the alluring power of the ring, it's power to manipulate those who hold it, and therefore understood perfectly well that even if he somehow killed Isildur and took the ring to destroy it, that ultimately he couldn't do it either, and worse, that he an immortal elf would become a ruler just as bad as perhaps Sauron himself as the corruptive power of Saurons ring slowly took control of him, and with time reduced him to little more than a great power under the complete control of Sauron. So in the end, Elrond could do nothing more than watch Isildur walk away.

I've only ever seen the movies so I'm really enjoying these vids and thanks for making them. I wonder what would have happened if the Witch King or any of these Nazgúl gained possession of the one ring? Would they not themselves become empowered with one ring, becoming some mighty lord like Sauron, free of Saurons control or was there something that prevented the one ring from corrupting and empowering the Nazgúl the same way it had everyone else? Although I most say I find the power of control supposedly offered by Saurons ring to be confusing anyway. If it granted such control over others and power to its wearer, then how come Bilbo and certainly Smeagol never came to rule like a Lord? Sure, in the movie we saw how Bilbo had some sort of immunity to the corrupting control of Saurons ring but there was nothing stopping him from using the ring to at least rule over the Shire like a king and live an even better life than he already did, even using the ring to benefit all Hobbits. We could dismiss Bilbo for not doing so as simply being a person already content with the life and freedom he had and perhaps even being aware that no good can come from the ring regardless of the best of intentions so he simply kept it as his dirty little secret, but surely we can't say the same for Smeagol when he had it? What stopped Smeagol from using the power of Saurons ring to rule over those around him? How could it be that Smeagol, with the power of Saurons ring instead became an outcast and banished? So what sort of power does Saurons ring offer to it's wearer then??

I find it to be fascinating that the elvish historians left out the fact that the orcs did not simply die out as commonly stated. In the early stages of Tolkien's mythology (when he wrote the Annals of Valinor in the 1930s), there was no concept called Maia. Instead, he preferred the concept of nature spirits. Tolkien later abandoned this idea and transformed the idea of nature spirits into the concept of Maia (when he wrote the Annals of Aman in 1950-51). If we define the sun as a natural element of Arda, Arien as a nature spirit representing this element can be considered a reflection of his earlier idea. Arien, a nature spirit responsible for the sun, was later defined as a Maia.

I believe that there are two fundamental metaphysical facts underlying the dragons' interest in gold: 1) When Melkor incarnated his spiritual power (will) on Arda, he concentrated most on the element gold. Dragons are also sub-creations based on the incarnation of Melkor's spiritual power. In Tolkien mythology, the soul being a whole causes entanglement (a kind of connection) between the sub-creations created by spiritual incarnation. This is also why dragons are inclined to the element gold. 2) From a theoretical perspective: The emergence of dragons especially after Melkor seized the Silmarils indicates that Melkor may have benefited from the power of the Silmarils in their creation. The spiritual aspect of their existence is a synergy between the Silmarils and Melkor's spiritual incarnation. Since the Silmaril light carries the light of Laurelin in its essence, the spectrum of this light is identical to the spectrum of the element gold. If dragons were created through the Silmarils, their affinity for gold may be based on this nature of creation.

Theory: Tom, whose spiritual being's image was formed by a synergy of harmonious melodies in the Music of the Ainur and came into being through Eru's realization of his vision of Arda, incarnated himself in the Old Forest as a benevolent nature spirit. Due to the dialectical nature of the music, Tom has a tendency to pacify discordant melodies and is unaffected by the One Ring, which is a discordant melody and neutralizes its effects.
@TarMody28 күн бұрын
Orcs can reproduce and continue their racial existence as the Children of Ilúvatar, but since their nature of existence is a reflection of Melkor's destructive will, they cannot create a constructive and sustainable life by creating a harmonious and positive interaction with their environment. For this reason, I believe that after the fall of Sauron, the Orc population in Middle-earth gradually decreased and their species came to an end.
