I can't imagine the Louis getting stuck, must have been worried about seismic gear they were towing for UNCLOS

Exactly. They could only use low power so we had to keep them going.

Nope. She’s gonna serve the Coast Guard at least until 2030, with services planned in 2023 and 2027 as far as I know. Hopefully she sticks around for her fiftieth in 2029

If you like Ice breakers, have a look at this documentary on the CCGS Louis St Laurent. I thought the video was on KZbin, but could not find it. www.dailymotion.com/video/x6eu1gd It shows all its tricks and how it works.

When the icebreaker breaks all of the Arctic ice ... The Arctic ice melts quickly and the polar bears have a hard time feeding. Warming does not mean that Arctic ice is melting fast. The reason is that the icebreakers break the ice.

This guy's an idiot. Breaking ice going astern exposes the rudder, prop and nozzel to loading they aren't designed for. The Terry Fox is akin to the Kigoriak. Breaking ice with the bow is the normal and expected methodology. That's why you ought to turn around and make a pass starboard to starboard and relieve the pressure that way. Well, what can you expect from heavily unionised work force that break shit so they can lay-up in a repair facility and not break ice.

I saw a painting in the Chief Officer's mess on the HMCS Saskatchewan with an AOR in high seas signalling with flags that it was in distress. A destroyer was coming to it's aid. The title of the painting was "I Will Not Forsake You".
