This is really helpful since I’m working on this Schubert piece and this is the only master class I can find.

wow, this is such a gift! full of humour, understanding and valuable hints. i learned so much and am so glad to have found these masterclasses in the internet. some of levins masterclasses i watched even 10 times. i understand now even deeper the sadness, despair, hope and joy that are hidden in our classical pieces. a big thank to mr. levin, his clearness and playfulness, to the students and their high efforts and for making the videos available. greetings from vienna/austria.

Its a shame about the recording quality; most of his masterclasses does not allow comments. Compare Levin to the like of any other concert pianist who 'class' their students. Levin makes jokes and ironically engages with the audience off the piano. He talks to them, he educates them whilst keeping within the realm of the music performed. Most importantly he does not patronise the student or make them feel at all unworthy. He builds a rapport so quickly with both audience and artist; a shame most masterclasses that I have seen is almost viewing pleasure. I cite Schiff as a perfect example of one who does not connect with the student or audience on a conversational level and his methods of tutoring does not allow individuality on the students behalf but rather the way Schiff thinks it should be executed.

Levin has the same genius and charm as he is as an explicator and teacher .Lucky students and his energy never dissipates .

I know Domonkos and Nafis had been student of Birmingham Conservatoire in Birmingham, UK. And John Thwaites (who posts this video) the head of Piano Department there. But I’m not sure is this taking place in the Conservatoire, as the hall does not looks like it.

This is the Adrian Boult Hall at the old Birmingham Conservative, before the conservatoire was relocated to different venue. This hall, along with the old conservatoire building have since been demolished.
