Get yourself a Pyrenean mountain dog. It will make your live even more difficult. But they will love you to bits once you get them under control.

My cousin owned two Berners, Pepper and Sage. I never learned to differentiate between the two! Anyway, when she had some family members over to her house, the doggos were relegated to the basement because there just wasn't enough room for both the people and the dogs. So I sneaked away and went downstairs to play with these beautiful animals. They were quite excited to play with a new person and I was loving it. At one point I was lying on the floor rubbing the tummy of one of the dogs. Soon the other one decided that I was paying too much attention to the one and calmly came over, took my forearm in it's massive jaws and drew my had over to itself. Of course it didn't hurt me in the least. Got my arm wet with doggy drool, yes. But didn't harm me in the least. I confess that I had a little trouble rubbing this one's tummy because I was laughing so hard. These dogs are gentle giants, they're beautiful and quite wonderful.

My brother had one. They never left each other's side. When my brother became seriously I'll I took the dog for walks and every ten feet it would stop and look back for my brother worried for him. Most loyal I have ever seen. Gentle but powerful.

I have had 4 Berners. These are the most wonderful dogs. Loving, loyal, funny, smart, easy going yet great guard dogs. You will have to look hard to find a more perfect companion.

They literally sweat hair - the rest are just adorable follies which can be kind of controlled - if the ear is on you...😉

A few of my dogs enjoy veggies, some were more selective in which ones they ate then others.

I had a dog that had a lot of Bernese in his mix, and he figured out really quickly that the old doors in the house could be forced open with his weight. On the toilet when suddenly the door flies open and he waltzes in and flops in the bathtub beside me. Also figured out how to open baby gates and taught one of his puppies to do the same.

Everything you've said IS a berner thing. They are very strange dogs... I've often said they are an alien race from another planet because of the habits they all share... including the way they look.

I’ve always been fascinated by this breed, they immediately put a smile on my face whenever I see them. My vet has only owned BMD’s. They must be really special if people buy them knowing that they don’t live as long. After my chow passed away I got a little dog because I wanted a friend who would live a long time. However I miss having a big dog in bed with big snuggles, and I miss having a dog that would enjoy the outdoors and hiking. My little dog is terrified of being in the woods with me. Dogs bring so much joy, it might be worth it getting another one, especially since I’m working from home right now.

I lived with my son and his wife for a summer to watch the kids. The Bernese MD chooses a favorite person and apparently their dog chose me, because after I moved out he would pee everywhere in the house! My kids did everything to stop the behavior and after several months made the difficult decision to re-home him. They found the perfect couple who had a lot of time and love to share, and they lived close enough for visits. The dog however, hated this plan and would not get out of their car or go in their house. After a couple of hours trying, they called my son and he went to pick up the dog. The best part of the story is that my son's wife called me to express what a mistake they had made, how much she enjoyed having the dog back, and don't you know he rarely if ever pottied in the house again!
