the steeps of rishiri seem to be the most Alp-esqe skiing available in Japan, on top of the crazy snow pack it seems like a dream come true! I guess I'll have to make another trip after southern hokkaido this winter

Where did you get info about avalanche risk in that area ? The round snow/ice crystals shown at 01:41 look as if they dont attach well to each other and are a perfect fundament for a floe avalanche.

Come to Sakhalin we also have same secret spots for nice backcountry skiing 🎿. Enjoyed with your vibes on Rishiri 🤞🏼

How good should you be at Skiing / Snowboarding to go downhill? I'm fairly good at Snowboarding and can do some black diamonds on the course, but I've never done Backcountry. Asking this to plan what I need to do to make this happen.
@OscarBoyd3 ай бұрын
hi! you should be comfortable skiing variable snow conditions in the backcountry. The snow quality is very mixed on the way down and can range from hard ice to soft slush and you should be confident skiing in all of them before you try skiing/boarding Fuji.

@@OscarBoyd Thanks a lot for the reply. Seems like I have a lot to work on before the Snowboarding from Fuji san.

Ah the memories. I climbed Rishiri last summer on a solo trip from Sapporo, it was the best 4 days of my life. Locals are so nice, the mountain is breathtaking and the whole island is just magical. While I was climbing up I couldn't see anything and the weather was so bad every Japanese hiker told me to turn around as they did because it's too dangerous, they were all wearing like 3-4 layers of mont bell while I was there in a T-shirt and a 100 yen raincoat haha When I got to the top it was like everything had stopped, the weather cleared and I saw the beautiful sight of the shoreline,it was so beautiful.

That sounds like a great trip! We were so lucky with the weather. We spoke to one cafe owner who said you’re lucky if you see the peak one day a month in winter.

Wow, that was a cool climb, especially with nobody else on the mountain. I climbed a few mountains in Shikoku this year but Fuji's the top of Japan. Omedetougozaimasu!

It's a completely different mountain without the people. I've always wanted to climb Shikoku's hyakumeizan, definitely on the list of must visits! 良いお年を!

@@OscarBoyd Last year hiked up totally off trail to the Shikoku ridge (not my idea!) - there was snow and ice and I didn't have on good hiking shoes - some slipping and sliding and swollen ankles the next day - slept in a lodge close to Sanrei; this year friends and I climbed Shiragayama and Kajigamori - nice waterfalls at the latter;;lots of signs warning of bears at Shiraga though we didn't see any.
