Blimey, you can’t even get a guard out of their cab these days, let alone haul a coupler!

In these industrial relation disputes we have currently it is interesting to me is that the driver has duties, like making phone calls and so on BUT the person responsible for protecting the train is the guard who also becomes the mechanic and gets his hands dirty. For the unwise; detonators are explosive compression caps laid over the rail so that an approaching engine or train would be in no doubt of the hazard ahead. Now, what happens if you don't have a guard?

Why did I watch this? I'm not in Britain and I don't drive a Class 43!

This seems silly that this guy has to do this himself. The engineer from the failed engine could have helped. Maybe he doesn't like getting his hands dirty?

As a Shunter at Penzance in the late 70s - 80s, I actually had to do this at Ponsandane Yard, a bit scary really, as the Loco had to keep moving back and for to get the distance right.

I can't believe you are still using this method of coupling! This is time consuming and dangerous! We got rid of this on all railroads with a few exceptions in street cars and trolleys. And those buffers, a good way to get crushed if you get caught in between them. I am so glad North American couples are safer. You don't have to stand in between the ends of a car or train. Does the train and locomotive have three points pf protection in place to prevent them from moving while someone is in between? At least your air hoses are like ours. And our conductors do not get covered in grease.

this is for emergency use only as the hst runs in permanently coupled sets

What I really wanna know is who the hell came up with this idea for coupling a fucking train?? Jesus for once I think America won an award for easiest and fastest way to couple our trains. Simply move the train at no more than 3mph and push into the train in front of you and BAM the couplers move into place and the train is coupled just like that! Of course connect the brake lines and any power lines but damn. Not that hard you don't even have to get out for the actual couple part 😂
@Dave21086 жыл бұрын
Sweet.. I use the GWR train to Cardiff. I will be able to lend a hand in coupling up a tug loco.. in the event theres no conductor to assist the driver.. ;) Now remember. Short pole any loco. Long pole just for an HST loco !!

I only ever had to do this once and then not in a real situation , but when I was being shown how to do it at Doncaster when I was doing my HST Training.
