Nice uku! Ever try the spray gun method for removing scales? I use to select the "jet" setting on the sprayer nozzle then blast the scales off shooting from tail towards head. Works pretty good on some fish. The caveat is that the scales go flying every where in the yard. lol

That would be easier than actually scaling the uku yeah? Scaling it is the hardest thing about cleaning uku. It fillets pretty well after that.

With your paddle attached but floating to the side of the kayak, it’s likely the Tiger Shark confused that silhouette for potential prey sitting along the water line like a wounded seal or other sea mammal. Large sharks like Tigers, Great Whites, and others will often attack their prey from behind and under. And biting the paddle area mimics biting a seal or other sea mammal on their flippers to incapacitate the prey and prevent escape since Sea mammals get propulsion from their rear flippers.

Saw this after looking for an old video a friend took. He was kayak fishing with a buddy off the Humboldt, CA coast. His buddy got rolled up on by an adult great white that was as long as his 18' kayak. His buddy was freaking out, but my buddy was talking him through it saying don't do anything, it's just curious what we are & what we're doing. Eventually it went about it's business without confrontation, but the guy in the kayak had a great video where he panned the side of his kayak and you can clearly see it was at least 18'. If i find the video again I'll share the link. This was in like 2017/2018. I will say that for knowing an 18' apex predator was right next to him and scoping him out, he handled himself quite well.

Even though I came out of my encounter with the tiger shark unscathed, seeing a great white that big circle me would very much freak me out. But I think and hope that, if a large shark is taking its time to sniff out a kayak, it's not gonna then attack it.
@ericlane80772 ай бұрын
@@sharaguchi1 Agreed. I would probably start screaming and concurrently making my peace. There has been several other incidents up there in the past couple years. There was a group of 3 kayakers that had the same thing happen, where dude responded how I would and started just shouting obscenities. A solo kayaker actually had a big white shark bite into his kayak and punch a couple holes in it. I suspect it did the same thing the tiger did to you and went for his catch bag but due to the size of it, the holes led to him capsizing and going in the very cold water. Some fisherman nearby responded quickly and pulled him out. Then a surfer got bit in an undoubtedly mistaken identity situation and needed 100 staples. I see a lot of people hating on here about doing what you enjoy and I don't think they get it. As someone that has spent years on the ocean, first in the Navy then through a series of my own sailboats, it's all a calculated risk. We're simply visitors, and a lot of people don't realize that the moment we're out there we are no longer at the tippy top of the food chain (especially in the open ocean). Won't stop me from doing what I love to do. Glad you came out unscathed from your once in a lifetime experience.

@@ericlane8077 Years ago a kayaker had his kayak bitten and punctured by a great white off Oahu also and he barely made it back to shore in his leaky kayak. And yes, the amount of hateful comments by uneducated people has been shocking. Shark attacks are mathematically so rare, especially attacks on kayak fishers. There are so many activities well all participate in, like driving our cars, that are far more dangerous than offshore kayaking. Thank you for your educated and thoughtful responses!

@@sharaguchi1 you're welcome! Keep doing what you do. I'd rather go out doing what I love. And if a shark attack ended my existence out on the ocean, I'd probably just accept it as preordained given the astronomically impossible probability of such an event happening. When I get closer to retirement, I've also told myself I'd finally man up and solo sail from Southern California to Hawaii. It's such a beautiful place, bordering on magical. It's been two decades since I've been there. Definitely envious it's your normal stomping grounds. Stay up!
