Well, people who worked with Oda said that he would revisit his previous works and try to connect his new content to that somehow. Which seems absolutely realistic and logical. Not everything is planned out years beforehand. He just expands and reinvents previous content

Back in to the maroneford battle , luffy fighting with mehawk , luffy about to puch mehawk and he sees the future of mehawk cutting his arms , and luffy deflects his punches to the ground. Mihawk noticed it and said you had a level up. ( Up it was an observation haki , future sight )
