Beautiful explanation but I had 2 doubts..what does the line "A history of sewage afloat, Thirst a bath, all inhuman" mean and also "All our dreams are like drunken jokes played on the reeds of an oft-used harmonium" signify?
@hrisikesh
@hrisikesh 15 күн бұрын
Good questions. The 'history' is a history of inhumanity, corruption, and misery. So he calls the history a 'sewage afloat' : something that you cannot look at and not be uncomfortable. In other words, when you look at the 'history' of that time you feel 'disturbed', 'uncomfortable', 'nauseous', as if it is like a "sewage afloat". Now what happens when there is no "drinking water" but "sewage afloat" all around? Can you quench your thirst as a human being? Can you take a bath as a human being? But you are living with it, like an animal does. So he says everything has become inhuman, life has become like the lives of animals. I would encourage you to contrast this sewage image with Tagore's phrase "where the clear stream of reason...". See, Rabindranath dreamt of an independent nation where reason would guide us and will never be suppressed by "dead habits". But what has actually happened? We forgot 'reason' ("clear stream") and went on with irrational, inhumane, indecent instincts ("sewage afloat"). Clear? 🙂

@@hrisikesh Yes sir understood..thanks a lot 😀 but what about the drunken jokes played on an oft-used harmonium? It would be helpful if you could explain this too🙏🏻
@hrisikesh
@hrisikesh 15 күн бұрын
And to answer the second question... When reality is so far away from what we dreamt of, those dreams seem to be "a drunken joke" (as if impossible, unrealistic, moronic to be taken seriously). He is mocking the 'aspirations' and 'dreams' of humanists. Of course, we know what Rabindranath dreamt cannot be a "drunken joke", but an ideal picture. Then why does the poet mock the 'dreams' as 'drunken jokes'? Actually he is doing the opposite. He is contrasting the 'real' with the 'ideal', by calling the 'ideal' a drunken joke, he is actually commenting on how dire the situation in reality is that we have already accepted so easily, as if we never cared for those ideals. We ignored the ideals in such a way, and embraced inhumanities so easily, that it seems we took those ideals as drunken jokes, never to be taken seriously. So, the poet is actually not mocking the ideals, but the 'people' who did not care for those ideals. "Drunken joke" means something that cannot be taken seriously, has no meaning or significance, or is utter gibberish. And an "oft-used harmonium" doesn't look good either. Even then, "played" in a drunken state, it may denote that it was out of tune. So, overall, the line means "something extraordinarily ridiculous". Clear? 🙂

The last time WBSU changed the syllabus was in 2023. So, in 2024, you should follow that version, as I have followed here in this video. 🙂 I suppose whoever is pretending to follow the earlier versions, as if that is to be followed, actually intends to avoid teaching texts such as 'Way of the World', 'Literature of Knowledge and Literature of Power', 'Goblin Market', and the two added Victorian novels. 😆

@hrisikesh
@hrisikesh Ай бұрын
With images such as 'fire', 'shoulder', 'art', 'hammer', 'chain', 'furnace', 'anvil', 'deadly grasp' etc., the poet actually evokes the image of a forge or smithery, a blacksmith's workshop where a blacksmith, with his ordinary humane powers and skill makes extraordinarily powerful and strong objects made of irons, such as a sword or a scythe and various other objects, some of which are for daily use and some of which are arms of destruction. Blake's point is that the creator's creativity and skill are shown by what he creates. Here the Tyger is a powerful and ferocious force created by the Maker. The Maker, like a blacksmith, is producing such a powerful instrument (Tyger) which shows, according to Blake's logic, how powerful the Maker is as well as how simple and humble he is in exercising his creative skills, just like a blacksmith. Clear?

@hrisikesh
@hrisikesh Ай бұрын
Thank you for pointing it out @debjanibiswas1409 . I made a mistake by overlooking the fact that Bulu died of high fever while they were at the ashram. I also want to point it out, since I did not in the video, that we don't know for sure the cause of death. Primarily we believed that the fever was the cause of Bulu's death, but looking back at Keshabananda's character after finishing the story, we have enough reason to think it was a murder, by poisoning her in the name of giving medicines. It cannot be said definitely, but it's a possibility that the 'sadhu' was reducing his 'baggage' already and keeping the ones that would be 'useful' to him. If the child died because of fever, that also points at the situation Partition created: lack of basic healthcare, besides the lack of food and shelter and other things. An innocent kid dies for no fault of her own.

"Browning's poems are suitable for soul studies". Explain this with the help of 'My Last Duchess'. We have been given this question in our college assignment. Do we have to examine the psychological elements of the poem? Any more points you would like to suggest, that I may include in my answer?

The question, if simply put, asks "how does Browning goes deep down into the psychology of the characters in his poems". So, study and elaborate the psyche of the duke, and appreciate how well Browning delineates the same.
