It's a mess. I've been doing German lessons for a couple years now, and learning another languages grammar and syntax makes it apparent that different cultures define concepts so differently that they often aren't translatable. I honestly need to read more steampunk to get a better feel for the setting elements and how they impact narrative. I use a bit in my own fiction, and as far as I can tell, it does lend itself to speculative fiction more. Nate pointed out that the use of gremlin slave-labor for high-tech manufacturing in Wand Smoke is akin to automation coming in the modern day. I didn't plan on that when I wrote it, but it fits pretty well. Thanks again for listening. I hope the rest of the Barbie analysis is at least as interesting as what you've heard thus far.

@@MarQueseDLiddle I have been a little less online than normal, having to do what is sometimes fun but always tedious, especially if I want to make it as a full-time author, go out and talk to people and promote my work. I think I'm getting better with the talking to people part, and promotion is pretty fun too, because my work has for some reason been deemed offensive and highly controversial. My argument is that it is Anti-"Weak" literature, promoting social values and norms which strengthen our society instead of weakening them like certain factions are doing to the U.S. culture now. You have to weaken a culture before you control them. I always love when a reader of my work points out some sybolisms I have psychicly injected into the text that I missed. Yes, based on some samples of what is considered stream punk, it 'feels' more to me of a bunch of frantic people.making and putting together contraptions and machines that are thrown together by what's available. Key and Peele do a good steampunk skit that kind of showed this to me.

The terminology is confusing even if you're reading and not just listening, so that's fair. The narrator and the other characters use different terms for the same things depending on where they are from and whether or not they are speaking generally or specifically (e.g. pigeon being a specific kind of bird; a gnoll being a specific kind of hob). I don't do much to explain that explicitly to the reader, so a close reading is necessary to understand the categories with ease. It's a valid thing to critique. Thank you for listening despite that, though.

11:10 This is the reason why I learned Japanese, to draw me closer to pure weebdom. To my dismay, it pushed me further away, to the point of wiping it clean. Japanese is a heavily context-sensitive language. English is quite the opposite, and it's one of the sticking points of ESL, how discreet we speak. To the point it can be a burden how exact we are to even to Romance cousin-languages. Translated stories aren't just written by the original authors but are co-written by the translators. The tropes come across novel to Weebs as a group because of the half-and-half nature of them. Much of the original culture shines through simply because of composition. But the fine details have to be super-imposed by the receiving culture. If you were to look at these hybrid stories through the lens of either of these societies, they are a strange blend which doesn't really make much sense and have no place in either. The trope, by proxy, is the building block of innate cultural narrative; one built by centuries of evolution and iteration. Certain societies have common tropes simply out of frequent interaction, but to slice them up and merge them together as Frankenstein would rummage for parts, is what makes the niches of translated media so off-putting to many. Therefore, allow me to submit the above as another bullet point toward the thesis. The Weeb Is Always Wrong.
@MarQueseDLiddle
@MarQueseDLiddle Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the contribution. And yes, I've noticed this specificity issue when reading all sorts of translations. Chinese (assuming Mandarin, though the texts are really old so who knows) is guilt of this ambiguity, and it comes across in their translated philosophical works. French is worse, way worse. Every time I read something by a French author that has been translated into English, I notice that equivocation is the rule and not the exception.

When I started writing and interacting with other writers, I was super confused that writers got angry and disheartened when I compared their story concept to existing high-quality stories that I was familiar with. It took me literal years to realize that people thought pure originality and incomparability with other fiction was somehow a major advantage of their idea. Without knowing it, I was taking that away from them - that mistaken idea that they'd come up with something nobody could have thought of before and nobody will ever think of after they're gone. Now I know I'm doing this, but I still do, because they will have to get past that feeling to get anywhere in writing, and also because it's funny to see them get all sad about how not original their "totally original" christmas tree of mediocre ideas borrowed from Brandon Sanderson and George Martin turns out to be. Also the nonhuman characters question was a lot more than a month ago.

Nice. It's a very good idea to bring philosophy and purpose into literature. Doesn't get talked about enough. Lovecraft is horror, though if I had to apply fantasy or Sci fi as a modifier, his work is fantasy. I think it might be best to analyze genre according to "intent" or "purpose" and that THAT may make all this analysis easier (writing this at 41 minutes in, or so) edit: thriller and horror can be distinguished not just by intent of author and the story, but also because horror means "dread" and thriller largely means "high energy/excitement." What's interesting about these two emotions is they are basically indistinguishable biologically when we experience them, though they actually cause very different consequences second edit: erotica is "low art" in the sense that it has literally no higher purpose or intent than to titillate. Titillation or shock are some of the lowest forms of "art" possible. Romance has a purpose, intent, etc, but these days is unfortunately is largely poisoned by loads of erotica. But while that may be popular, I would argue it's not like we can't imagine a romance that DOESN'T have erotica in it. The Ah My Goddess Movie is an example, or Somewhere in Time, for two examples
@MarQueseDLiddle
@MarQueseDLiddle Жыл бұрын
The distinguishing between the experiences of the reader is where I've arrived in my personal definition of "genre" after this conversation. Thank Brad for that, for I was ready to abandon the label entirely. I agree with your assessment about excitement being different than dread, thus producing a different categorizable effect on the reader. At this point, I think genre can be broken up into the following: Comedy = joy / elation Tragedy = sorrow / anger Thriller = excitement / "fight" response Horror = fear / "flight" response Sublime = wonder / awe / "freeze" response Erotica = eros / titillation There are probably more, or a few of these can probably be broken down into more fundamental categories. And as you mention, these aren't exclusive from one another, and they also need to layer in elements of plot structure and setting in order to most fully be useful in communicating what a work is. As for author intent vs a formal approach looking only at the work itself, I tend toward the latter. I suspect there are human-universals which trigger these feelings when couched in archetypal symbols. Author intent is more cut and dry for sure, but it runs into the subjectivity issue which I'm trying to avoid. Oh, and thank you so much for listening!
