Our family has been celebrating Christmas Eve like this since before I was born and it wasn't until this Christmas Season one of my sisters told me about this movie. I absolutely love it. It's quiet, personal and extremely well-acted. Our fish meal (which we never called 'feast of the seven fishes' but "Christmas Eve" dinner) was typically breaded and fried shrimp, calamari both fried and stuffed, scungilli (conch) salad, bacala salad, fried bacala, smelts, mussels and vermicelli in an oil and anchovy sauce. We also had vermicelli in butter and garlic sauce and chicken cutlets for those who didn't like fish but the preparation was part of the joy. We also has Pizzarose (sp) -- an egg-heavy moist cheese cake along with all the Christmas cookies. After the passing of our parents and sale of the family house, we kids still celebrate on Christmas Eve although we went from all those fishes to just the vermicelli and shrimp (and pizzarose). Besides the pizzarose, my aunts used to make struffoli and fig'honey cover rosettes. And as usual there was always that bowl of ribbon candy. It's a wonderful tradition and this is a wonderful movie.
